Brother All Day - LEJOG machine?

  • Freewheel? Gears? Pah!

  • I’ve still got the frame and wheels at my parents. Maybe that’s the next step in my fixie regression.

  • Cheeky 17 miles with my brother (both bike and relation) today. He described it as punishing, which it was a bit with the wind. Bike seems capable as owt. Just need to see how I can handle longer rides - was redlining a touch on the main climb!

One other note was how comfortable it is in the drops. Can manage to climb out the saddle in the drops without the need for circus contortion skills. Helpful with the headwind!

  • Punchy little run out.

Is that your brother (relation not bike) in the distance? And, is he wearing a silver skinsuit? If so, have a word.
    ;)

  • Ha, that’s me!
It’s a set of Mario Cipollini bib shorts that I bought off here. Described as “too sporty” for the seller. I understood instantly what they meant when I put them on.

And then a white Planet X top that was in a bargain bin. It became obvious why it was so reduced when I put that on too. It’s a very euro look. Aside from my belly hanging out!

  • Oops, don't I feel like a fuckin arsehole now!
    You look fantastic!

  • It is an outfit that is deservedly derided every time I wear it - I look ridiculous in it haha. I’m just too tight to buy cool cycling gear. Cheaper to have a sense of humour about looking like a pillock :)

  • I think Nefarious’ low pro inspired my Les build…

  • I sold you a CXP14 low pro wheelset for that bike didn't I?

    Sweet ride.

  • Yes - I’ve still got them! Lovely wheels. Suited the build well.

Here’s a better photo of the bike setup worse, before I learnt about saddle angles. It made it to bike porn back then - I don’t think it would now!

  • God that seems like a lifetime ago. In a way it is, I guess.

Really glad to hear they're still running. I have no idea why I spent so long tracking down those rims.

  • Would have been around 2011/12 I think? I need a new axle washer and then they’re good to go, they’re just in my parents garage with the frame. Many bits have gone over the years but I just can’t part with the lo-pro and wheels. But I’m slightly worried the lo-pro has rotted away under the powder coat. There’s some bubbling on it in places. But it’s seriously down the list of priorities. A practical fixed gear commuter is whacky enough at the moment, never mind a lo-pro!

But part of me does fantasise about building it up as a fixed TT bike and having a go at some 10 mile TTs.

  • Have you got any photos?
Looking through your threads made me realise how many of your bikes are forum classics! The Raleigh and Orlowski in particular. Very of their time but still look totally wicked. Double HED3 is just absolutely ultimate. If I come into silly money, I know what wheelset I’ll be getting.

  • Cheers, yeah when times were simpler and all I had to worry about was building sweet fixies. I sold Les as a full build to @shinkuu_kiss , he started a thread and his first photo is just about as it was when I finished it (think he changed the saddle can’t recall)

  • I remember this too now I see it!

  • I definitely also remember looking at your build when I got that frame off @TM (he'd already done all the work tho🙃)

I have also been following this thread because it's in the name of the forum but I think you have the only fixed build in currents now?
How times do change... (fixed till death, this build is chef's kiss emoji)

  • @jono84 has some fixed action in the pipeline it looks like.

In a funny way, my beater snapping in half was a fortunate kick back into fixed bikes. The beater was rank average and joyless, but still fun for what it was. And building a quality bike to fit in its boots has been really rewarding. The psyche for even sillier bikes is returning! And I may even put some attention towards my road bike now that I’ve found out how much difference a bit of care and attention (cash) makes to a bike.

  • Quick q on the frame - how are the cable guides meant to work? I can see standard bolts in braze ons and can't fathom how the cable outer is meant to be held in place.

  • It comes with clips. So you can run it with nothing for a clean look. And I like it because I can run a cable outer the whole way.

  • Ah cheers, that makes sense! Now wondering if I can find a few of those clips..

  • Search for "p cable clip".

  • Exactly what I was looking for - many thanks!

  • Some fixed miles today. For such few miles, I feel absolutely battered.
Managed to drag myself all the way up Pool Bank, which was nice. Decided to keep going and had a stab at East Chevin - which went less well. Had to stop about 4 times. Once the power is spent, there’s nowhere else to go!
Then back round and up Creskeld.
Seems I need to do A LOT more of these if I want to survive HDIJ!

  • How do I make my bike more comfortable for longer, multi day rides? I’m tentatively thinking about a fixed LEJOG and wondering about improvements.

Saddle: I’ve always used Flites, but all the ones I have are hard and become pretty unforgiving by the end of a long day. Brooks Cambium with a cutout?

Seatpost: is there much to be gained from using a carbon post? Are suspension posts good? I’d be worried about not being able to push into the saddle when climbing seated.

Aero extensions are on the list for aero and another comfortable position.

Also braking. I currently have Paul Touring cantis with Koolstop pads. The front is noisy (which is remedied with toe-ing the pads and cleaning the rim again), front disc would be nice, but likely too complicated with new wheel, fork, lever etc.
in terms of pure performance, what’s the best bet short pull brake? Would it be silly to buy a Paul Mini Moto for the front?
