• WOW! Well done, many folks would have just rolled over, or spent weeks trying to find the web guy who had gone surfing.... Obviously very talanted. Bravo.

  • Cloudflare just got back to me and are lifting the cross user CNAME ban, meaning I can migrate the domain back there.

Linode also got back to me, there were backup errors last night, I suspect because the VM is now much busier and now they have to switch it to a different backup strategy.

Overall though, dashboards and alerts all look good

  • Words that mean little to me - but thank you again for keeping the plates magically spinning!

  • TBH there were typos so it was gibberish. Just fixed them, so it makes sense now.

  • Everything back to normal on my browser now. Thank you dear leader.

  • btw, I do all this in vim

    Excellent.

    Undotree as a rollback strategy?

  • What is this rollback thing that people keep talking about?

  • It's a myth that one peddles to insurance companies to lower your premiums.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Somewhere in step 30 I did delete a critical file... but hey, that's what Git is for... just copied a local version back to the server.

People stress too much about these things.

  • Cloudflare just got back to me and are lifting the cross user CNAME ban, meaning I can migrate the domain back there.

They fibbed... cross-user CNAME is not enabled, and one of the forums just went down, so I've transferred back to Linode 🤷

I think I'm going to long-term come off of Cloudflare, the nicest part is the bit I wrote... the firewall capabilities.

But in the rewrite https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/379635/ I think I'll just add the capabilities directly to the platform so I don't have to be on Cloudflare to have an effective firewall.

    1. ERR no spare domains... purchased microcosm.ch as one should always have a spare domain name lying around in case you need it.
  • superb stuff. well done boss man. will try and up my donations a little

  • Gandi just got back to me about microco.sm:

The domain name status is back to Active. We are still waiting for the report of the registry to have more details on the issue, we will get back to you as soon as we have more information.

Don't hesitate to inform us should you have any inquiry or require any additional assistance.

    Best regards,

    Gandi Corporate

    🤷

I'll set up a permanent redirect from microco.sm to microcosm.app and will move on with life.

    1. Permanently HTTP redirect (HTTP 301) microco.sm to microcosm.app, the old domain will exist until mid-December, which is enough time for everything to be pointed at the new URLs.

Am tempted to add a HTML canonical URL to the top of the pages as there's a mild risk that things will think we've duplicated content rather than moved domain.

  • Just saw another DNS hiccup impacting pignolefixe, csgrupetto, and the sites which are subdomains of microcosm.app.

I've hard-coded an /etc/hosts entry on one of the servers to prevent impact whilst DNS continues to update.

  • If they tell you I'd be interested to know. The SM registry aren't easy to deal with as you mentioned; but it'd be strange for them to suspend a domain without warning.

  • Oh yeah, I'm dead curious.

I still wonder if there's an eligibility rule that I no longer meet, i.e. I'm not an Italian citizen, incorporated in San Marino, etc.

The physical address on that domain is my old street address too, the difficulty of working with SM meant I never successfully got that updated (despite notifying them)... so if they mailed a physical letter to notify me of something, then I missed it — I doubt it though.

  • Thank you for your continuous efforts (and entertaining wizardry), boss, this was also a good reminder to donate again.

  • Cloudflare assure me that they've sorted the cross-user CNAME grandfathering... and since I cannot check externally, I'm switching nameservers to find out.

So I'm moving microcosm.app from Akamai Linode DNS to Cloudflare DNS.

Will monitor for breakage on the dashboard below... basically if it goes red, I back out.

  • Must have done something right as I can see all pics again :)

  • I am so impressed by all of this, none of which I understand.

    Do we get tags back?

    #MargaretThatchersPenis

  • I leave the country for one fricken day and bossman destroys lfgss...

  • How come you couldn't get the original domain restored in the first instance? Too long of a process?

  • Is that still the last update you've got from Gandi?

"Soz bro we dunno why your domain just went to shit"

  • .sm is San Marino, an Italian principality and the domain costs so much money every year precisely because they're so painful to work with. AFAICT it actually involves faxes and emails in Italian to a small office where there's likely 1-2 people working there running the whole thing.

This massively reduces the chances of success in getting it back... I did get it back, some 36h into this, and even then they've not been able to explain why the domain was suspended or what happened.

I didn't wait though, because I knew roughly how .sm was run as soon as I understood that the domain was suspended I didn't want to leave this in their control... by moving to a different domain name... well, at least this was within my control.
