  • This is probably as good a place as any to ask. Do scales that measure body fat etc actually work? If so, any recommendations that won't break the bank?

  • How festive did we get, gang? Also, thread name change?

  • Yeah, I haven't weighed for weeks.

    Time for a resurgence.

  • How festive did we get, gang?

Heaviest I've ever been at 110KG, so just bought the lightest bike I've ever had to create equilibrium. I'm going to need to get on it (the bike) this year - had a wobble last year due to club member death and and personal incident on a ride immediately after, which was meant to be the ride to convince myself the road was safe.
Having been in the fortunate position of maintaining weight before I don't actually know how to lose it. I'd like to get down to the magic 100kg. I'm hoping 3 months is achievable.
    POA:
Breakfast - I've never really eaten it, but guess 14hrs between dinner and lunch is causing 'storage'.
Lunch - Eat less. Having not eaten for hours I'm usually starving and pig out. Soup, and other stuff that isn't a shop bought sarnie!
Dinner - Continue Gousto - found this really good for portioning and general wife life, shared cooking etc.
Exercise - It's going to be strange starting from 'nothing' but I'm just going to head into the woods sans Garmin for the next 3 months and see what the numbers are in March. My obsession with data is not going to do much good for me at this stage.

Now if I hadn't got 10KG of chocolate and a toastie maker for xmas... sigh.

  • Updated!
In December, I basically went from lightweight to welterweight...

Temporary bloating has gone, so starting at 74kg.
Somewhere between 66-68kg is the goal.

  • 10kg is 3 months is definitely doable.

Given the popularity of intermittent fasting, and how effective it is for some people, I don't think you're causing 'storage' by not eating.
The main problem for people who don't eat breakfast is that they often get into a habit of eating loads of crap snacks, overeat at lunch and eat biscuits at their office desk.

I wouldn't force yourself to eat breakfast if you don't normally. If you're aiming to lose weight, adding extra food is unlikely to help.
I would eat lunch earlier though, maybe 12pm.
Soups don't fill me up, and I'm hungry within 20 minutes. Maybe I'm mentally conditioned that soup is almost always a starter (unless there are noodles in it).
Shop bought sandwiches are generally ok, the crisps/chocolate and smoothie you get in the meal deal, not so much.

I'd have a reasonably healthy snack between lunch and dinner (high protein, or decent serving of fruit), and eat your normal gousto dinner.

Exercising regularly again will make a bit difference, though you will feel a lot hungrier.

Have chocolate as a treat one day of the week, eat

  • Signing in for 2024. Went from 83kg to 88 kg over the course of 2023 (most of the increase in the last couple of months). Target is to get back to 83kg, I am back on the Nutracheck monitoring to keep an eye on eating, and Strava challenges to maintain motivation to exercise.

  • 2022 and 2023 didn't exactly go to plan and, despite a fairly restrained Christmas, I weighed in at 91.2kg on the 1st and was knackered after a slow, flat, 40km ride

Still trying to get back to my 2015 fitness (75-78kg and comfortably riding hilly audaxes and long singlespeed off road rides).

Plan is to go hard for the first month and aim for 1kg/week being strict on calories and trying to find some joy in riding bikes at the weekend.

  • Signing in. Had been relatively good until summer '23 when a holiday followed by a very enjoyable break away from any real exercise became the norm which when paired with a relentless December has been the aversion therapy needed to get me back to it.

    02.01.24: 83.2kg.
    Target: a consistent 75kg

    Plan:
2nd day of 16/8 intermittent fasting primarily as a way to curb late-night snacking/beers. Planning to get back on the rowing machine which has been my time-constrained choice of cardio, and back on the bike which has been a long time coming. Going to throw in some weights for shits and giggles as well.

Will report back and good luck to all those who celebrate.

  • Up to 79kg with a new job in November and then the December silly season.
Holiday start of Feb so need engage in a fairly dramatic shred fest but outside of that would just like to get to around 76-75kg which seems to be the right place for me (but probably change some of the accumulated fat for muscle plz)

  • 92 beginning of year, 82 April, now 84 (mostly in December).

Once I've finished these mini cheddars, I'll known the snacks in the head again and aim for 80.

  • Haven’t weighed myself since before the Christmas binging began, and it wasn’t great news last time I weighed myself.

Waiting till next Monday to deliver the bad news to myself. Still a lot of leftover Christmas food to get through.

  • Ta. I'm pretty happy with it.

The previous year, I had dropped from 90 to 81 within 3 months, but then put it all back on again plus extra over the rest of the year.

That first hard dieting exercise helped, insofar as it helped me understand how much I was eating.

But, it was mentally exhausting. I love my food, and I love cooking, and trying to come up with new meals every day, and restricting the calories in them left me wiped out. Even a weekly cheat day (no calorie counting, but also no splurging) only went so far.

Once I hit my target, I had no exit strategy, and just went back to eating too much.

Last year, all I did was keep an eye on portions, for which the previous diet had given me a better eye, and limited snacks on chocolate and crisps.

Let's see if that works again.

  • I think - portion size, booze, sugar is my holy trinity of weightloss.

  • Back on after letting it all slip.clocked on at 89kg today. Aim is to get to 75ish.
I find portion size difficult as really enjoy my food.

  • Lickle bit of E-Coli has really kick-started my 2024 campaign 🤢

  • Wasn't caused by some mrs Kirkhams was it?

  • I didn’t have a target beyong “lose weight” but managed to shed 14kg over 2023 (was 16kg but an all inclusive holiday to a week had predictable results). Most went quite quickly which was very motivational, then it slowed but still continued steadily downwards.

For 2024 I have set a 5kg target but with that want to get a better balance between muscle and, ahem, non-muscle.

Main things that worked for me were more exercise (I had lost confidence but gradually regained it), smaller portions, zero crisps or processed snacks and less booze (I did backslide on the latter as the year progressed). Doing the supermarket shopping helped as I could just avoid having temptation in the house.

I’m hopeful but not complacent that this approach can continue to deliver in 2024.

  • M&S Collection pork rillettes was the only thing I ate and wife didn't.
Should have stuck to the French tinned ones from the Vietnamese supermarket.

  • All inclusive vacations will definitely not help with weight loss... especially with the goal of getting monies worth. I'm with you on the grocery shopping. Hard to keep ice cream from getting in the cart LoL

  • Had to go to a Dr's just before Xmas and weighed my eldest and myself. With indoor clothes I'm >95kg. Which is heavier than I've ever been - including playing rugby at school where I was eating tonnes and training every day but one.

Lightest I've ever been is 69kg, so not expecting to get anywhere close to that, but would really like to get to a solid 80kg by the summer, or at least by Nov 24.

Also now I'm in my 40s I'm conscious of my age and that my dad (totally different build) went from a whippet to fatty in his 40s and never shook it off.

  • First week weigh in and flat at 79kg - back into the gym 3 x this week after a couple weeks off and back to more usual running volume. Would’ve been nice to see a drop on the scales but it’s ok as I’ve still been eating some of the remaining Xmas food (mostly cheese).

  • Bluetooth scales - yes or no? Need a new set of scales, worth stumping up for the feature?

  • I like them. They can automatically feed into whatever app you’re using, which means i can weigh daily but close my eyes and not look at the number, so get more data to show my steadily ~declining~ increasing weight

[I don’t know how to do strike through here]
