It's almost like politicians need to bring people along with them.

There are however outliers
Yep. Progressive governments are the outlier, the statistics show it.
We're limited to what 13 labour ministries of the last 37 since 1945, 5 of which were Blair/Brown who most dont consider progressive. Again not all the others were either.Edit: not saying I'm happy about it but, numbers innit.

They'd be idiots then.

• #7555
I quite liked them.

Understandably, Blair's reputation is trashed by his unqualified support for George W Bush's invasion of Iraq. But set that aside, and his administration did a lot of good, with some major progressive policies, i.e. the minimum wage, SureStart, lifting a million children out of poverty, BoE independence, etc.

But this thread is for watching the Tories eat their young, so let's focus on that.

There’s like some policy shadow boxing where labour are in a much stronger position. where they, defensively, play it safe and avoid attack from r wing press/city by rowing back on policies, which i think largely were unnoticed by many peopl as is their disappearance; tories, in pursuit of votes, make up stuff that is either not thought through and causes bad headlines and dissent, or which ends up potentially wrong footing them in their semblance to reform.
-
• #7560
Labour are, I think and hope, avoiding giving the right wing press (which is the majority of it in the UK) even a tiny opening to hammer them with “loony left” headlines.
Look at the tornado of shit about Rayner- Labour have to give nothing away and sit there whilst the Tories total lack of competence continues to manifest itself in e.g. rivers flowing with human shit.

So the bill passed. Surely this has to be the final nail in their bigoted coffin? The news really crushed me this morning. Kind of want to go sit on some runway tarmac when the time comes... fuck the tories.

What we need to know:
Which airlines
Which fuel company
Which catering company
Which
airportAnd as one, we boycott them.
-
• #7567
It still has to get royal assent... but a quick google reveals the last time those stuffy tax-funded squatters actually stopped a bill was 1707. And that was only to protect themselves against the pesky Scots. We're such a sham. Embarrassed to call myself British today.

It'll be a private charter company, no chance any passenger airline would touch it, it'd be a pr disaster.
Probably safe to assume that most of the people using private charter airlines aren't overly concerned with ethics and in any case I'm sure they'll argue its a risk to national security to disclose the airline.
-
• #7569
Question is which of their major donors owns a private charter airline and will charge over the odds for this?
-
• #7570
And it's likely to be an RAF base and even RAF planes: https://www.forces.net/services/raf/defence-secretary-hints-raf-could-be-used-rwanda-deportation-flights
RwandAir (the national airline) declined the request to provide the planes for the flights.
-
• #7572
I'd be massively surprised if any commercial airline will get involved in any of this. it wouldn't be the first time the tories have lied about this stuff. The RAF have already said they don't have a secure enough airfield and wanted £20 mill to do the required upgrades required.
I still think there strategy is to hope the left judges block it and they can play the victim, enemies of the people etc.

This new law will be challenged in court, that is the only glimmer of hope at the moment.
What a shameful day for this country. Performative cruelty pandering to, I hope, a small segment of the population where we pick on the most vulnerable people in society. Sunak should be coruscated for this, for eternity.
-
• #7574
Wasn't the suggestion that it was going to be the RAF, probably because no commercial company would touch it.

and meanwhile 5 people including a child, lose their lives attempting a crossing this morning since the bill has been passed.
what a fucking shitshow of a heartless government, in an ill conceived attempt at points scoring with a minority of right wing biggots.
fucking fuck the fucking tories.
Yep, individually they were overwhelmingly popular. The argument against is usually that when taken in aggregate it was all too much, which I can see being a fair point if you're a fiscal hawk like most of the media.
