‘Best of a bad bunch’: voters in ‘red wall’ willing to give Rishi Sunak a chance
Panel of Sedgefield voters say they have lost faith with politicians, and Keir Starmer is not doing enough

Voters in the historic “red wall” seat of Sedgefield in County Durham, where Tony Blair was once elected to parliament, are willing to give Rishi Sunak a chance to improve their prospects as the cost of living crisis deepens, since they say Keir Starmer is “not making a case for himself”

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/nov/03/red-wall-voters-willing-to-give-rishi-sunak-a-chance-according-to-focus-group

  • I know nothing about focus groups and how the info from them is used, but doesn't it seem a bit silly to have a focus group of five people and report their comments as possibly representative of a population of 70,000?

  • So much this!! The trauma.

  • Seems to work numbers-wise for the tories and electing what they think is good for the rest of us, mind you ;)

  • It still sounds pretty consistent with how they voted an reacted to events in the past. Maybe it's those voters who are all the same, like those dolls that play a sound bite when you press a button.

It's going to be difficult for Labour with an electorate that can only reached with lies, not a problem for the Conservatives.

  • Yep, this is terrifying. It's like they have absolutely no recollection of the past 12 years of Tory government and with each change of PM it's like it's a fresh start.

  • like it's a fresh shart.

    I think

  • I find it amazing that I'm typing this but I'm pretty sure that the actual though process for a lot of Tory voters is that with every change of PM, Corbyn and his terrorist sympathising Marxist cabal of wokes is not in power.

Yes, I know how stupid that reads.

  • I’m not sure that this is the right thread but given the Tories are the most egregious piss takers it’s as good as any.

Surely someone has to take being an MP to the logical conclusion - get elected and do absolutely fuck all for 5 years, no going to parliament, no constituency surgeries, all while drawing down £400+k in salary and claiming as much on expenses as possible and getting some sweet, sweet consultancies. Ideally you’d also do your existing full time job.

Wouldn’t be great for constituents but no worse than my MPs current approach

  • Hear hear! Bangs table

  • “I’m Big Ted, your candidate for parliament. Vote early, vote often”

  • You’re right, unfortunately.

  • get elected

The trouble is that bit tends to takes years of effort of one sort or another. You need to get selected for a winnable seat somehow.

  • You need to get selected for a winnable seat somehow.

    Go to Eton.

  • In the current climate stand on an “anti cunt” ticket in what has been a safe Conservative seat. Offer up nothing but pointing the finger at the incumbent. When things get tricky straw man and gaslight for all you are worth, if it gets really problematic just go red faced and repeatedly bellow “define your metric”.

Once elected morph seamlessly into cunt mode.

I’m gearing up to franchise this strategy

  • You'll need to try harder at the first point.

  • On not being a cunt? You have a point but I reckon I can fake it

  • @jellybaby is correct, but only if you're not a true zealot/have compromising pictures/are owed a favour/are a major donor. I knew a one nation Tory, who was decent if deluded, back in the 90s who had to prove his worth. He fought two elections, one against the great Dennis Skinner, he was never given a winnable seat.

  • doesn't it seem a bit silly to have a focus group of five people and report their comments as possibly representative of a population of 70,000?

That's the state of play with the current dominance of right wing media

    Though is this true?

Do the Express and to a lesser degree the Daily Mail currently hold away over major public opinion?

What about the newly politicised youth, the insta influencers?

Where is the nub of political trend setting now?

  • Mark Francois and Michael Fabricant managed without Eton, it must be related to there startling intellect and all round abilities.

  • Some people are obviously born cunts and don't need the training.

  • Braverman arriving by Chinook at Branston is great optics. These clowns really don’t give a shit do they.

  • War on refugees. It's great optics, depending on who's looking.

  • It's the fact it's happening at all that's depressing.

Interest rates up, austerity on the way and a recession expected to last 2 years. Yet still People vote for these clowns.

We'll be eating each other before the Tory party implodes and they eat themselves.
