Yeah, me too. It's trancelike when they get going. Saw them downstairs at Momo in, I dunno, 2007/8 and it absolutely blew me away. Got to interview the main man as well, which was an experience. He couldn't speak anything but Congolese, so I had to ask his bandmate questions in French, which he then translated. A real eye and ear-opening experience.

Played this at a LFGSS south drinks BBQ party in 2004 because I thought it was a secret weapon but south drinks crew knew about it so that made it better

Is this thread mostly for older stuff? Im a huge fan of all the new music coming out (of especially Nigeria), and was hoping this could be a place to pick up stuff I missed

subbed, great thread. Thanks

I reckon the criteria are: African and bangers, so new and old. Got to admit I've not been paying attention much recently, so would also appreciate seeing some newer stuff posted.

Yep that's the criteria, wouldn't mind some contemporary electronic stuff personally but all submissions are welcome

Used to play this one out back when I did that kind of thing in the late 00s/early 10s.

Took way to long for some Alpha Blondy to get posted

Not really a banger but floaty bright loveliness. -

No love for Johnny Clegg on here? Good African name that.
Okay he's very white. He was born in Rochdale. His lyrics are trite, to say the least but some of his toons were absolute bangers, albeit somewhat Europeanized.
He was s'posed to come over with his multiracial band in about 1984/5 iirc to play some shows at the RAH but, cos they were from South Africa, and even though they were vociferously anti-apartheid, the Musicians Union wouldn't allow it. Always felt Jerry Dammers was a bit of a cunt ever since

I’ve got me dates wrong again haven’t I. That’s when that record came out anyway

Years just blur nowadays. Tune is a banger.

Touareg rock - Bombino. This must have been one hell of a concert in Djanet, in the Algerian Sahara, the concert was held in a canyon, so acoustics must have been amazing.
Another great Tuareg rock band Kader Tarhanin

One of the most talented of Zimbabwean multi-instrumental musicians and vocalists, Zivanai Masango.

I remember Johnny Clegg and Savuka - think Andy Kershaw and Janice Long used to play some stuff from them - but I seem to remember it being a bit meh. It certainly didn't chime as much with me at the time as, say, the Bhundu Boys did in that era. But the SA boycott I did support. Yes, they were totally against it, but the point was isolation and they should have supported that. Same with Paul Simon. All very well saying you're giving 'unknown' musicians exposure, but what you're really doing is breaking the boycott and profiting from it waaaaaaay more than those you've 'exposed' have.
This is also why I will not listen to or accept any band who played Sun City during that era. Scabs. Fuck what they thought they were doing. They were breaking the boycott.

This thread is embiggening my enjoyments
I'm such a fan of this style with the amplified kalimba and hectic drum rhythms, trips a switch in my brain and makes me go a bit hypnotic
