  • Everything plumbed so I could test everything is connected properly, everything works as it should; radio, hvac, horn, hazards along with the seats electrics.

Happy to say, not a single dashboard warning light in sight. Result!

  • Looks great.

  • It’s love hate at the moment.

Wouldn’t start after 6 months in the garage, possible early ignition switch failure. Eventually got it out.

Couldn’t do the rear discs as the calliper pin is seized.

Old wheel bolt collars were beyond scabby, replaced with new ones.

  • Good thread, older cars doing older car things, you think your sorted and then something comes out of nowhere, usually the day before you need the thing to work. My neighbours got a mint 2000/2001 2.7 soft top, been in their family from new, parked on the street, in use multiple times a week but always immaculate, if they ever decide to sell will be picking it up.
Worst ones are those that have sat somewhere for more than a year unused, or worse that have been lying around back of a garage or bodyshop for a much longer time, appealing low mileage and lower number of owners, but issues abound!

  • Absolutely chuffed, it passed the MOT this morning with advisories. Two of which were the rear discs.

  • Yeah, replace those. They are not that expensive, and you'll also find your handbrake works better as it's not trying to grip onto a whole lot of rust.

  • Potential fixed the intermittent starting issues. Ignition switches are a common failure and are cheap as chips. It can cause a host of key related issues or electrical issues. I was experiencing the latter.

Working on these Boxster is not great, fiddling job but well worth it. So far so good, the key is also turning a lot more freely and it’s starting on the button.

I’ve started the door cards, to keep the labour costs down with the upholster, I’ve chosen to remove the existing carpet myself.

  • All was going so well, managed to get out every evening after work last week for some Somerset B-Road blasts.

Second image will show the passenger side is down, and drivers side is normal.

No idea how, the roof decided to stop working. Specifically the passenger side would lift at all, and now it’s twisted.

It was stuck in the down position, I removed the roof linkage ball joints, these were not broken, but are original. These were a bastard to get off. I really struggled getting the hood cowl linkage ball joints off, and was left with no option but to remove the hood cowl.

Once I’ve got a larger pry bar, and removed the cowl linkage, I can remove the transmission units and inspect. I suspect a worn gear.

My plan it actually remove the roof and get a hardtop, that has always been the plan, as I am not actually a fan of these style roofs. I’ve always used it with the roof up.

  • The culprit has been caught, snapped motor cable. All I had to do was pop the cable off and check, instead I’ve take everything apart, and got the 2 side transmission motors out of sync.

New cable ordered from Design911. I’ve also sourced a hardtop 10mins down the road. Once the clamshell is operational again, I can install the hardtop.

  • The bugger is fixed. The clamshell is aligned and I’ve put the roof into manual mode (disconnected) ready for the hardtop.

The procedure wasn’t too bad, once I got my head around it all. Fit new motor cable, refit the passenger side hinge for the clamshell.

Test everything is working ie; is the clamshell even on both sides and moving up and down. If not, unplug one of the motor cables, and use a drill attached to the cable to realign one side, using a measurement from a reference point.

  • Surely you've got to keep it in convertible mode for the summer?

  • Glad it's fixed..

  • Fair comments about the roof, I’ve never really liked it. It’s tatty and makes a racket when it’s up.

Ideally the roof needs replacing, perhaps a job for 2024.

  • makes a racket when it’s up.

    They all do that sir.

Well at least mine does and it looks in otherwise pretty good condition.
Is yours a plastic window? Having to stop and do "the chop" when putting it down is a bit of a pain

  • Yes mine was the plastic window, couldn’t see out of it as it was so cloudy.

I collected the hardtop today, I am thankful I sourced one local to me. During the week I tried to remove the mounts and bolts from the sellers car, no chance.

£108 later and a trip to OPC Bristol resulted in these absolute rip off fixings.

I’m very pleased with the hardtop, most of my annoying rattles have disappeared and it looks so much better.

  • 100% it looks so much better with the hard top. Tidy.

  • They're definitely quieter with the hard top (speaking of my 996 here but they're pretty similar), but I love the theatre of putting the hood down, and there's no better way to hear the induction and exhaust than sitting in the open air.

How much does the Boxster hardtop weigh? The 996 one is a two person job, maybe 60-70kg?

  • It’s definitely quieter with the hardtop, I’ve always driven generally with the roof up and windows down, and I don’t feel like I am missing out with the hardtop with the windows down.

Interesting though about the weight, it’s must weigh around 30-40kg I reckon. It didn’t feel that heavy when installing, but there was 2 of us.

I have a counter that I could do, and that’s to remove the roof entirely, just not sure if that’s a sensible idea.

  • Just took it out and grabbed a few photos.

  • Did a small road trip camping weekend with my bro. We decided to explore Wiltshire as it is halfway house between us, plus it’s a place you tend to drive around/through than explore.

    Shaftesbury - Good Hill
    James May Pub
    Avebury
    Marlborough
    Camping near Stonehenge
    Wilton
    Salisbury

The car performed really well and was good fun to give it a good drive. The past year or so I noticed the Boxster gets a bit hot unless you’re moving, I decided to check the coolant level and once topped up I noticed the temp was more stable.

  • Car is looking good. this thread is partly responsible for me purchasing a 2000 986 2.7 yesterday!!! Saw your post on Boxa.net, glad you're keeping it..

  • Yeah it's a tricky one as my wife doesn't really like it, and now we have a dog, collectively we can't say go to coast in the Boxster with the dog. Pound for pound, I can't name a better car at this price point.

Got any pictures on your new Boxster? congratulations by the way :-)

  • Mines a Silver 2000 2.7 with 95k on it.. Has a real good history with IMS, Clutch, Condensers all being done.. Had front brakes and full service at 94k.. ding on wing and other minor marks, needs a new rear window and also only has one key (remote doesn't work) and a door lock..

I've been painting kids bedrooms so haven't even washed it yet.. needs a good going over and some proper pics.. Love the side profile with the roof down
