  • Excellent work so far

You know exactly what you need to finish off that deck...

  • That should survive the apocalypse

  • I have several different plans downloaded for rocking chairs.....

  • Hopefully. C24 dry graded 6x2 joists, green treated 4x4 posts with post savers, multiple coats of Ronseal shed & fence preserver (dark brown to make the frame less noticeable through the deck board gaps) extra attention paid to cut ends and post tops (which were cut with a run off angle), 150mm structural screws for all joints plus joist hangers for good measure (nailed in to counter the lesser shear strength of the screws).

Deck boards will be 33mm x 145mm and getting two coats of deck oil. May then also paint the shed with the same oil for colour matchy matchy and extra UV protection.

  • Doing that work between calls yesterday was a bad idea. I don't feel well and my wee looks and smells like Guinness. Haven't tasted it, yet.

Drinking all of the water today and reassuring myself that I got it done before the weekend rain and today's scorcher.

Ordered the deck boards, to be delivered next Tuesday. I love Fulham timber.

Still need to decide on the front edging. Will I lap the first horizontal board over the top of the vertical facing board or the opposite? I'm also 99% sure I'm going with smooth side up since learning fairly recently (on here and elsewhere) that the ridges are for looks and not for grip.

If I go with the first board lapping over the face board, I should be able to stick to the number of boards I wanted with a 5mm gap instead of 3mm.

Will be using stainless screws at the recommendation of @ColinTheBald

  • Fitted a new blade to the bandsaw from Axminster, seems to be cutting straighter now. The old (stock) blade had hardly any set to the teeth in comparison. Also beefed up the castors/base. Had to build out one corner to account for a twist in the cheap stand.

  • Old blade cut on the left of this offcut. You can see it drifted right (top to bottom). Right hand is the new blade cut.

  • Deck boards arrived a day early.

  • Fascia and first four down then ran out of screws. Also had to resaw over a metre of 2x4 to remake the bottom of the door frame as I had to cut 30mm of the doors to clear the deck boards. Left hand door is on the piss a bit as I had to cut them in situ due to fitting anti tamper screws in the hinges.

  • Recycled the legs from my old workbench and some left over 2x6s from the joists and made an outside workbench.

  • Panorama makes it look wonky, but it isn't. 150mm screws through the top into the 4x4 legs. Doesn't feel like it needs any bracing.

  • Non wonky picture

  • Little bit of driver bit storage. I've ended up with multiple tubs of driver bits all over the place. Had the drill press set way too slow to start with, ramping up the speed reduced the tear out significantly. Every day's a school day.

  • Also didn't think about the placement of the mounting screws until it was mostly done.

  • Now realising the screws could have just gone through the holes, feck.

  • Cut off the annoying bits

  • Few tweaks to the shooting board. The work piece was not being held up high enough for the plane blade and the bench hook was a bit flimsy so glued another layer of thin ply to the face and reglued/screwed the bench hook.

  • Also made a charger board. Have a third coming from eBay. All three will be wired to one plug (not much drain off these) with space at the far end for an enclosed terminal block.

  • Looking to build an Adirondack chair for fun. Thinking of plugging the screw holes for a change. Trying to decide whether to go for matching pine or contrasting oak (plugs cut from a freebie worktop offcut). Thinking of going for the oak to make it a feature.

  • pine but do the grain at 90 degrees

  • I agree, too much contrast and things start to look crafty imo.

  • The way the plugs are cut, it's hard to tell the grain direction until it's sanded. I'm going with the contrast.

  • Progress for today. Front legs will be cut down when I decide on the height of the arm rests.
