Looks like he deleted it
Can see the discussion that started from it:
https://twitter.com/BarristerSecret/status/1498055777373798413Was citing a law that says UK citizens can't fight in a war in which the UK is not at war with one of the parties, they seem to be arguing it isn't relevant as Russia and Ukraine haven't declared war...
David Davis was on LBC citing the same Law earlier

i'd be interested to know what they thought made it unlawful as I can't think of any law that would prevent it generally...
-
• #654
Probably this -

Don't know the UK laws but a friend in Austria who joined the foreign legion in the 90s lost his citizenship.
-
• #656
I find that strange - i wonder when someone was last prosecuted under that law, or even whether it would survive a test against ECHR
-
• #657
notwithstanding the legality or otherwise, it strikes me as a very short sighted position

Was gonna says, what about the Spainish Civil War but realised it was a civil war.

Just flicking through the various new channels on Freeview to try and find some up-to date information to find GB 'News' presenters and pundits joking happily about an apparent Hollywood film of the Ukrainian Soldiers on Snake Island who told the Russian Warship to go f@*k itself and whether they survived or not. I know GB news is a pile of steaming rightwing bullshit but to have absolutely no sense of decency or the seriousness of the situation, let alone the terror of it for real Ukrainian citizens absolutely beggars belief. Utterly appalled by them

Good point. There may be more recent legislation re. Syria etc but it may be more terrorism related. Saying that, is Putin carrying out a terrorist act? Using violence to achieve political ends - maybe.

On Reddit there are sound recordings with Russian and Ukranian soliders cursing each other over radio. Which has taught me that 'you used condom' is an insult in Ukranian. Awesome.

Can we rename the thread so something more appropriate?
Conflict is my girlfriend yelling at me, stuff that's happening there is much more than conflict.
-
• #663
Agreed it’s not a conflict it’s an invasion
-
• #664
It is technically both a conflict and a war, as you can see by the BBC's own prevarication on the subject:
I have however changed the title.

People going to fight in the Spanish Civil War were warned of the risk of prosecution, but no prosecutions were actually brought. Presumably on the basis that the prospect of getting a jury to convict someone of fighting fascists was extremely remote and therefore it wasn't worth the effort. I suspect the same would apply here, but it's still technically illegal for a UK citizen to go to fight in Ukraine.

What’s the situation for dual nationals?
-
• #667
Not sure. Probably not such an issue in the 19th century when the law was passed.

How about "Russian Invasion of Ukraine".
Conflict / war are a bit mealy mouthed, considering Russia's overt aggression.

Conflict / war are a bit mealy mouthed, considering Russia's overt aggression.
To my mind, that demeans Ukraine's resistance thus far.
This is a war where the sides are not equal, but the actions of the Ukrainian troops and people are more than so. -

That's fair enough.

Humbly suggest 'Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine'

More and more clueless young soldiers captured: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cag1pblAA-A/
They were heading for training to Belgorod (Russia) . They woke them
all up in the middle of the night and told them to get in the cars and
follow the convoy. When they got to the border they questioned their
sergeant and were told to follow orders and keep following the convoy.
When they got to the city (he said the first city after crossing the
border) convoy was lost. He was asked about their mission and object
to what he said he had no idea what they were doing. -

Lawrence Freedman's latest piece
https://samf.substack.com/p/the-fight-for-ukraine?The problem with designing a peace deal is the same problem that has surrounded this conflict from the start, and it goes back to the narrative war. Putin has described the stakes for Russia in fantastical terms that have little relationship to the actual situation. He wants to de-Nazify a country with a Jewish president and Prime Minister and protect the people of the Donbas from a ‘genocide’ that was a complete fabrication. So Zelensky can promise without difficulty not to be a Nazi and not to conduct a genocide. What he cannot do is to deny Ukraine’s right to exist as an independent state following its own path. Putin’s people claim that is not in doubt. The problem, they claim, is that the wrong people are in charge. If so presumably they would have no difficulty with free elections under international supervision. Putin can be encouraged to put his theories about where the sympathies of the ordinary people of Ukraine lie to the test.

From The Times
And to further emphasis the failure:
So the government’s definition of "family members” it is willing to save from war in Ukraine excludes:
- Adult children
- Parents of adults
- Brothers and sisters,
- Grandparents
- Aunts and uncles
- Nieces and nephews
- Adult children
Here’s what it said:
