  • Looking great . A Modern classic.

  • Loving this!

  • Yep 🔥

  • Thanks for the positivity!

Just looking at if I go down the weight weenie route or just build it up… I know I’ll be pissed off if I get it finished then change my mind!! Could be a sub 6kg bike with little effort and a few quid

  • Yesss !
Edit: i wouldn't bother going the ww route, just build it up and enjoy

  • My mates scott cr1 105 5600 groupset that he had 5 years ago.

  • Still be lighter than most modern carbon bikes today 👍👍

And bit more inspiration for the build from the web!!

  • You right about the weight.

  • Needless to say, if you're using 7800 on a CR1 then you're already building a very light bike without needing to go full WW. And it'll feel amazing to ride.

Much will depend on wheels of course. Those Ksyrium SL S.P. wheels are apparently 1500g. Not too bad tbh!

Maybe just consider the affordable WW hacks, if any?

    • CNC brakes (~£70 on eBay) like Planet X or Fourier's, are 205g a pair. 7800 brakes are 315g

    • Lightweight butyl or latex tubes are <70g each. Normal tubes are 100g ish.

    • A carbon saddle (i.e. Romin) might save you 100g+.

    • Most bar tapes are near 100g, Deda tape is 40g.

That's ~350g saved without buying anything too fancy. Might turn a 7.3kg build into 6.9kg.

Either way it's gonna be pretty zippy.

  • It does seem like the modern £1-3k are all much heavier than they were a decade or so back (inflation playing a part of course!) and the super lightweights are out of favour for aero.. have aero and low weight together and it’s £££££

  • You’re spot on there. I’ve built a Trek 5500 (DA 7800) and a Scott Addict (Red 10) which I utilised the same method as you described, even using the same Planet X / Fouriers brake callipers, you’re cock on with the weight difference.

Although latex tubes were an anti climax, after behaving like tissue paper during fast group rides.

My eBay / AliExpress wish list is growing 🤣

AliExpress also has the zero gravity carbon calipers at a not too silly price, 160g

  • Give me a light weight bike over a aero bike anytime.

  • Just out of curiosity; is a 20 year old lightweight carbon frame safe?

  • People are still riding colnago C40 around. Just get it check before hand.

  • Good point, I give them a good looking over but this is something that is a risk.. same could be said for steel with internal rusting I guess, it’s all a risk (unless you pay for testing!)

  • Saddle purchased 😎

  • Wheels are Ksyrium K10 hubs rebuilt with SL rims, about 14 years old now but won’t die!!

  • It does seem like the modern £1-3k are all much heavier than they were a decade or so back (inflation playing a part of course!)

    *cough* DISC BRAKES *cough*

  • Devil brakes!!!!

  • Going for lightweight on a budget, should have all the bits early March after AliExpress deliveries are here..

  • More AliExpress, this time a 31.6 seatpost.. nice quality with Ti bolts for £20 and 160g, cant grumble. Coming together now, cables then tape & ride 😎

  • Frame looks so nice and shiny. You mentioned lacquer. Is that the trick? Which lacquer?

  • .

  • There are some small marks on it in the normal places (head tube/rear stays/other bits) which I’ve touched in with a touch type lacquer made for cars. You can then t cut that back to give it a shiny finish but in the right light it the marks will be visible still! I used t-cut on the whole frame then used a car wax to get it looking fresh 👌🏻
