@ChainBreaker thanks very much! Haha, had to cycle from the ferry too, wasn’t paying to take the car over for this.. 😂
Yeah uh huh, think if it’s really nasty the helicopter bypasses Kirkwall and flies straight to Aberdeen. I had a really nasty fall that led to a fractured skull and two seizures in the middle of lockdown. At that point ambulances in cities were taking 90 minutes to get to people but I was in the hospital in Kirkwall within the hour l, and that was with a 25 minute ferry ride in the middle of some really high winds!

Good effort. I've done the other way around, so the end stopped underneath my nail. :)

Ooh, nasty! Think I’d have preferred that though, had half a nail come off when I rattled my thumb a few years ago doing roadworks, takes forever to grow out and just heal and I get impatient..

Fuuuck me, ouch. Touch wood I've not done something serious, yet. But with my my DIY-ing lately, it's the death of a thousand cuts. Overshooting with the plane and clipping my knuckle on something, closing the stanley blade on my finger, slipping with the chisel, bouncing the saw out of a cut and onto my guiding thumb. That sort of thing, tiny injuries but usually have 7 or 8 of them on the go at any one time.

That pic of your nail made me wince, maybe steel finger cap gloves should be a thing.
-
• #382
Haha I’m generally pretty clumsy but the same in that I’ve avoided major injuries, mainly… always seem to have something healing though.
@jontea yeah I reckon that might be my next purchase if such a glove exists, I’ve seen anti cut gloves but don’t know if that would manage a concentrated puncture like that?

Missed the bone, quick anaesthetic and a tug out with what amounted to medical needle nose pliers. Even managed to cycle back for my last boat instead of having to stay in the hostel so I’m counting that as a victory after today

Well done!

Haha cheers, taking every win I can at the minute 😂 knowing that I’ll see a workshop frame up when I head home definitely helps! Think their plan was to scaffold round it this afternoon, haha although that was with a 3rd set of hands on site rather than in a&e..

Love that you took a photo of it and thought 'lfgss will love this' - get well soon!
The whole project looks amazing, well done

Ouchey! Butcher's bandsaw operators gloves. Chain mail essentially. But like you,I'm not sure they'd withstand a concentrated perforation. Heal swiftly.

I scrolled down thinking 'I really hope he hasn't posted a pic of this, oh nope, there it is....'

Awesome project. Indeed a dream. One day.. Subbed

Argh! Well at least you didn’t staple your scrotum to the roof while working alone on a cold rainy Saturday, eventually forcing you to cut yourself loose to avoid death by hypothermia and starvation, while constantly being attacked by seagulls.
-
• #391
Also, post pics of workshop. Much envy.
-
• #392
Oooft, that's not much fun. The one photo you've posted which hasn't made me massively jealous. Heal up soon!

Voice of experience? 🤣

Gothenburg seagulls are the worst for sure.
@Creek_Tebsin I really love seeing the progress in this thread. Living so close to the sea will most likely fantastic. Also Island time is such a good concept!

@si_mon628 haha can’t just be posting the good things. If there was a picture to sum up the waking up at 4 most days panicking about what needs done and who I need to chase up that day I’d be uploading that too..
@JurekB yeah I’ve seen them before and considered them but reckon if I show up on site with them now there’d be too many medieval or monty python based jokes..
@MTB-Idle sorry about that, figured it was ok seeing as it wasn’t full of blood or anything, wasn’t sure of a trigger warning or not for the squeamish.
@russmeyer yeah I agree with @Bearlegged, that sounds like way too specific a choice of scenario for it to be something that hasn’t happened!
@psee thank you so much, it’s coming on, and will be worth all the work in the end. Building it was the only way we’d be able to afford anything like this.
@ltc thanks very much bud, little tender today but between work and that I reckon I’ll be back at things in the house by the end of the week.
@SasenFrAsen lovely to be able to post some progress, feels like things have been moving again recently after what felt like a really stagnant period. Completely agree with being next to the sea, I’ve found it incredibly calming as the city was starting to get pretty overwhelming for me. After my head injury a couple years ago i find a lot of different noises at once very difficult too, it is noisy up here with the sea and the birds and things, but it’s a different, less intrusive noise.
Here’s some more workshop pictures, think the loadall is coming today to get the trusses and gables up.

Sorry to dissapoint, I was just musing on possible fates in the field of rural carpentry.

Workshop view envy...
This thread genuinely gives me current life anxiety. Why am I flogging away at what I'm doing when I could live there, with that view (and that workshop)?

I have this conversation with my partner every time we go away. Always comes back to "but remember we're on holiday and all the life crap we aren't dealing with atm still happens here, plus it's a really long way from our parents" We have kids so being able to call in the
cavalrygrandparents occasionally for emergencies is pretty helpful. -

Because the system brainwashed you.
My parents lived a lot of their life just around the corner from you. They're happier than ever since they sold up and moved to France. It's not for everyone though.

Yeah, there's no way the missus would be up for that sort of life change. We're 35-40 mins from both sets of grandparents etc.
My parents have a place a long way south in France and every time I go there, there are really nice places, in quiet, super beautiful locations barely any money and i can't help thinking that I'm wasting my time.
OUCH! I hope it's not into the bone. That looks painful. Hope the journey wasnt/isn't too bad.
