  • Some more bits from Charlie arrived in the form of a 52 t and 53t sugino chainrings and a 16t dura ace sprocket. How much use the chainrings will get I don’t know. I believe the hire bikes run on 50x16 so that is where we’ll start

  • Any update on this?

  • Yes… but not much. Pete has braised the frame together and I just need to get to see him so we can get paint and any finishing touches sorted.
Illness which precluded riding meant it wasn’t a priority.
Last time I saw him we’d even decided to re-name it the Alfano Saffron Lane as his (now) old frameworks was literally a stones throw from the old velodrome.
I’m back from France at the Ed of June so I’ll get it finished off then.

  • Time to start updating this project as it will hopefully come to fruition this side of Christmas.
I'm currently outside the UK until the end of October but I'm off to see Pete at Alfano Frameworks on my return.
As mentioned above the project has been renamed (again) as Saffron Lane. A quote for the paint has been obtained from John Burke at Croma works and H Lloyd cycles has been approached to see if they can reproduce the 1982 Track World Champs image as a Seatpost decal as those champs were held at Saffron Lane.

  • Is this gonna be lugged?

  • Yep MAX tubing and lugs

  • Just found this thread after your comments on another. Awesome project and a cracking name. Did you ride Saffron Lane? I have some great memories from there. The rattling and weathered boards did scare me a bit, though.

  • Thanks, no I didn't ride Saffron Lane but a good friend if mine from the Isle of Man called Adrian Mooney rode there several times. He was stoker on a bronze medal winning tandem in the Nat Champs back in the day

  • Well Pete has been able to do a bit more ork on the frame and so it may be ready to go to the painters in the next couple of weeks. Here are some pictures he took...

  • You're very patient, the first post is 3 years ago.
    Looks nice!

  • Interested in this! I used to run round Saffron Lane as a lad.

  • Sweet!

  • So many things have cropped up putting it on the back burner. Hopefully it will soon be sorted

  • Was on Derby Velodrome today with a Saffron Lane regular back in the day, Dave Miller. Still a very tidy rider.

  • Photo from the dry fit

  • Looks good. Nice jaunty angle on the chainstay bridge

  • No lugs in the end? It does restrict the angles i suppose.

  • Very nice. Deserves some wild paint job!

  • Yes I asked Pete to just funk it slightly to give it a bit of character.

  • Ultimately a little disappointing but hopefully it will still be a good result

  • It's off to Croma paintworks in Nottingham as soon as Ive got the Leicester world champs transfers sorted from Lloyds

  • In what appears to be the most dramatic of plot twists this project is no longer proceeding. Without going in to too much detail Pete and I have parted ways on this but remain good friends. Although this has been a long time in the making, when it was necessary for him to give it his full attention, for one reason or another he was, by his own admission, unable to. Hopefully when he has sorted out a few issues he will be back in the game for someone else. C'est la guerre.

As three years has passed since this project began, I've decided to go with that very well known , and local to me framebuilder.... Mercian. See the new project thread!

  • Wild. Frame looked (almost) done though?
