  • Sorry to link to amazon, but I'm deciding between these two on the prime day sale, which should I go for?

    AEG 7000 SensiDry Freestanding Tumble Dryer TR718L4B, 8 kg £489 - 2yr warranty
    Samsung Series 5 DV80TA020AX/EU £529 - 5 yr warranty

Will be in a cellar but hopefully temp won't drop too low to cause an issue.

  • I’d go for the longer warranty, all other things being equal. Energy efficiency looks broadly similar.

Thanks for the cooker hood advice folks! That Miele looks top!

We had a Siemens TD that died recently, also came with a 5yr warranty, lasted nearly 15 years, 3 kids and a couple of house moves.

  • So much this

Everyone misreads the minimum height as the installation height. Raise it.

  • If I could I would, the external vent/ actual hole is straight out from the top of the hood, very bottom of the duct. The ducting/boxing above is primarily aesthetic. Could probably squeeze max 100mm. Could obviously patch, move up and redrill, but not sure I really fancy doing that.

  • Doesn't 100mm seems like it would would be a free improvement that you could live with?

  • Do you know what caused this?
Did the product have a failure or did you put a tray directly on the base of the oven?

  • Finally got round to removing my Seimens hb63ab551b oven.

It looks like one of the top heating elements has gone.

I'm struggling to find out how to remove the element. Anyone got an idea? This is the back.

Also I just tested it at the connection with the wires - is this fine? It showed continuity for things like the fan element and one of the grill elements, but not the other (the whole grill element is interconnected, so it all needs replacing.

    Cheers.

  • It looks like you disconnect the rear connections, unscrew all the bits inside then pull.

But I'm reticent to just crack on with that approach without checking in first.

  • Do you know what caused this?

Not sure, my guess is that the bottom element or insulation below it failed. It’s a properly shit oven. Took forever to heat up. Glad to be rid of it!

  • Is it not just the two shiny screws on the inside then remove the element?

Everything should be done inside the oven.

  • You're approach to replacing the element is likely correct - the ovens i design go together in a similar way.

If your continuity check isn't working on the outer two tails it probably means the outer ring of the element is dead - you can normally use the inner and outer rings of the element separately (grill vs eco grill or some variation of function).

  • Yeah interesting, we have had some failures at work on wall ovens where someone has left a tray on the bottom of the oven cavity (which most ovens tell you not to do) and it can cause them to basically set the bottom of the cabinet on fire.

Turns out that someone is me and my wife. TIL. Whoops

  • That's good to know, I have been doing that sometimes

  • Yeah i mean, check your oven user guide, may not be an issue with some models

  • Cheers.

For context, the issue is that the heating part of oven trips the fuse (fan control dial and light ≠ trip, turn temperature on = trip).

Also I tested the continuity of the other elements from the back and they were aok.

It's not whether or it's not heating as I can't get that far. Although it's an old oven now, I'm suprised the grill element heats when on fan. But then maybe it's combined or something with a low heat in the top for faster heating. The fan element is suprisingly small Vs the size of grill element.

  • With modern ovens generally, you'll find that the function you select may use any combination of elements even though it might not make sense for what you've selected on the function dial.

For example, some ovens, regardless of the function you've chosen will turn on every element in the product for the pre-heat cycle to get it up to temperature then turn them off, and that's normally why most recipes say to pre-heat your oven before putting the food in, otherwise if your oven bangs the grill element on full chat in the pre-heat phase you can get a lot of ruined food loads.

Fan element being small compared to grill is normal, is your fan element a single coil or multiple?

  • What is the consensus on hobs with integrated extractor fans?

  • I’d prefer to keep the two devices separate, just so if one aspect fails you are not paying to replace a two in one device.

Especially as an extractor fan can be much higher than most people install them.

  • I think they’re good bc extractor hoods are ugly

  • You can buy a down draught extractor that goes behind your cooktop as a separate unit

  • Surely this depends on how you feel about Jai Hindley?

  • Single coil.

All makes sense. Cheers for the informative post.

  • Consensus is unlikely.

I'd hate to lose the under hob storage for utensils, cutlery and plans. Then theres venting which would be awkward in my space.

  • The silly thing is they can be mounted in the ceiling, but are not well known. Also most people think the extractor is meant to be like pointing a vacuum cleaner at the hob.
