Burners

  • what kind of loop were you thinking, where would it attach?

I'm a fan of low-fi, low-profile solutions, the simpler the better - and I really like it when users can interpret as they like. I need to direct some brain-power to this, mock up best ideas, and go riding/running without regular bib setup .....to be continued....

  • Sounds interesting, hope to see some prototypes in the future! Good luck with the problem.

  • Re backpacks, have you considered adding an internal separator to it (maybe at 3/4 height?) and make it a double-pocket backpack? It might complicate the process and add a little weight, but might also make it more useful. Gold or orange fabric (a'la sfbags or tom bihn) for the separator to make things more visible inside?

  • Yes, I did a few samples with a simple, folded drop-pocket in the upper section - these were destined for commercial production at one point, but that's another story. I found the invitation to put heavier things in, like a phone, means the bag ends up unbalanced and warps in this lighter fabric. However, not to say it's not do-able! Perhaps something with a bit of stretch could reduce distortion, and that's a good point on the colour - an orange would look great against the olive.

I have got a set of samples, Russian Doll-esque, with increasing volume, weatherproofing/durability, weight and organisation. Just need a magic wand to make everything happen sooner(!).

  • self reminder post for future large musette hijinks

  • I almost wanted to recommend some kind of thick grid/plastic thing to give it some heft but that would also mean weight, keys and other sharp items would frequently catch on it, wouldn't isolate any mess/crumbs, and so on. (not to mention the use of plastic...)

(Received the masks btw thanks... had missed out on them with the burner)

  • any interest in new products?

Niche idea... a sort of discreet lightweight non irritating & secure insert to wear to mask the transparency some bib shorts end up with, meaning they can be used still.

  • I’ve played with the idea of a drawstring or folded ultra-compact saddle bag, secured by a small, lightweight piece of double sided velcro. Obviously my attempts have been very unrefined, but I imagine you might be able to conjure an elegant solution.

  • Sort of like silk underpants?

  • ...love this idea - perhaps something in a rattle can*, like that spray-on fabric or tubeless sealant??

We've been looking at this issue, with long-term degradation of the elastane/lycra (it's so exposed to damaging sunlight, sweat salts, road spray) causing the show-though, so building into bibs from the start.

But this is a neat idea, that you could keep stuff running for a longtime beyond the point they should have been binned.

*the spray on would mean you could offer it/apply it mid-ride to anyone in your group who 'shows some cheek'.

  • And brain-power is turning to under-saddle tinkering stuff soon. It's a super-technical ask; the repeat buzz/rattle of often dense/dead weight puts such crazy stress often through very concentrated points of the design. Not to be entered into lightly!

....but been a busy week here. ....think there's some people on-here, riding Pan Celtic Race starting Sunday?

  • These are shaping up really nicely, each rider receives one in start pack on Saturday. Beautiful colours, with a matching cap :)

  • I might buy that spray.

  • Love the colour way

  • love the medium musette, fits in my wallet it's so small, an actually take anywhere bag for life.

  • Definitely keen for a large musette if you make another run! Also interested in a burner with a strap (or having my existing burner modified with a strap).

  • Wehay! x150 Pan Celtic Burners ready to head to startline outside Plymouth this weekend - big thanks to my support during this week.

Stoked about this, looks like a cracking route, weather looking ok ish, and these Burners are a lot of fun…..! Might setup a thread in Rides & Races to follow the chatter and On-Here dots.

Will be getting back to making next round of musettes & backpacks once I’ve caught up, so thanks for interest and messages - will post more info here as it happens.

  • :-S

  • Looks comfy!

  • It was! One big luxury puff pile ….but distressingly I had to wrap & compress them all down into three taped-up bolts of 50 each. Looked like one of those documentaries where Customs pull over moody back-packers

However, bit of time to make sure they’re travelling in style ✌️

  • Very nice

  • Pan Celtic Race is on the road, +130 riders en route….

….thought I’d have a bit of fun while making all the Burners for the racers. I included emergency tyre boots in a handful of them - also can be exchanged for a drink or an ice-cream once the race is over.

Not heard of anyone finding them yet, but hopefully they’ll make themselves known when they do, and I’ll send a Musette/Backpack too from the next round I’m going to make - list happening in next few days!

  • Given all the discussion here of high-performance technical fabrics I thought I’d share this that I saw yesterday @chopsicle - a hip-length parka made by the Inuit of Inupiat (north west Alaska) or Nunatsaivut (Labrador, Canada) likely towards the end of the 19th Century. Made to protect against the wind, chill and wet conditions in the harshest of environments (specifically for hunting and kayaking) - and given how long it must have taken to make its reasonable to assume it worked and was durable. Super light and packable - it looks basically like its made out of film. Material? Hand stitched seal intestine (so it’s also got by-product synergy going for it too). In the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.
