  • You can always do it another time, to the plans they’ve already drawn…

  • This is pretty much my view.
Luckily the delay in the works starting means that my wife will be back at work after mat leave and so we can save a little more vigorously during that period. I’d really not want it to cross through Christmas though!!

  • I'd like to put a rooflight/window in the kitchen (once we complete, hopefully in a week now).
Can't tell whether one big one, or two smaller ones make sense, or whether there's any structural issues or daily use and maintenance issues I'm overlooking.
Kitchen is 2.6m wide, and 2m deep, when looking towards the existing window.

The plan is to take down the wall on the right side of the photo below too, which'll open it up into the dining room. Also most likely that we'll be using DIY-kitchens, but Ikea's planner lets you play with sloping roofs and rooflights, hence using that to mock up.

  • Controversial counterpoint: just live with what you've got for now and do the work in 5yrs time.

  • my wife will be back at work after mat leave and so we can save a little more vigorously during that period

I once had that dream, and then I discovered how much nursery cost!

  • my wife is the main bread winner, so for us it makes a significant difference

  • Genuine question, what would be the point?
Building costs might have decreased? Kid is older so less likely to fuck stuff up?

My thought is, do it sooner, live in the house we want for as long as possible to get max value from it and worry less about ROI (lol)

  • One light will provide cleaner light to prep food - that said roof lights provide much more light than windows, so for a kitchen that size maybe overkill and all your light centralised over sink rather than worktops?

  • i think we might scrap the plan to divide main bathroom into an en-suite and bathroom as this should provide enough wiggle room to get most everything else done and we could always do this at a later stage (however unlikely)

  • Cool - I was leaning towards one as it looks a bit cleaner, and will provide more light into the dining room as well. Will def have under-cabinet lighting too [insert all of the things meme]

  • alternatively if you have two then you can run a set of spot lights in-between for night times / general lighting.

  • I like the single option, go big or go home... think they will let in roughly the same amount of light but having a large bit of glass in the ceiling will feel amazing.

  • I'd definitely go one big one, it'll probably be cheaper than 2 as well, we put a couple in our loft conversion and the initial quote was for 60x60cm, we upped them to 1mx60cm and I think it only cost 150 quid more per window.

  • I would love to do something like this (the architects are literally at the end of our road, too!) but 99% sure we're miles off budget-wise.

  • Oh yeah, thats great, imagine about 15k's worth of work and glass for that kitchen roof/window alone.

  • How does your extractor duct out? Straight up through the roof, or horizontally out through the wall at high level?

  • Some of those don’t actually go anywhere. I was surprised to learn this as I thought we were quite limited with how we could arrange the kitchen, but they just suck the air up into a charcoal filter.

  • Straight up and out through the roof, if at all, as far as I can tell (not got the keys - going off photos and videos on my phone).
This current kitchen is all coming out though, with the boiler (upstairs at the mo) hopefully coming down stairs to sit in the top left of that photo.

  • Looking at the cross section of that house- do houses in UK not have basements?

  • Usually not. Older houses might have a coal cellar but probably not very big. Sometimes there is something basementish if the house is built on a hill.

  • Sounds good, and sounds like a much larger project than just the rooflight. I imagine your boiler will want to duct straight out the wall and your extractor will remain vertically up through the roof (assuming it is not recirculating as @J0nathan post).

I was going to flag overall rooflight size and buildup of condensation from being directly over your hob, but suspect this may change once you model the space with wall units/extractor et al.

Agree with others that a single rooflight would be nicer than multiples, and likely to work out cheaper product/forming openings cost wise.

  • I wish! It'd make the perfect drum room!
When we were looking we found a few specific streets nearby that had them, but almost certain this one doesn't (have a few friends on the same road and no-one's mentioned it).

  • Yep! It's a 40k kitchen... ...and bathroom, floors, structural alterations, plumbing, electrics, roof (not complete replacement), re-pointing (upstairs at the back), decorating, think that's it..!

  • Thanks for the input, I've agreed to send him half now and half on day 1 - he's happy with that. He said money in advance is so that he can order a skip etc. which makes sense I guess.

  • what would be the point?

The two points you listed, plus freeing up headspace now as well as seeing if your needs change.

The latter point, may or may not apply based on what you're doing. With two little kids getting bigger, I've been fascinated at how much what I feel like I need has shifted and how quickly. <8mo you need a massive estate to transport them. >1yo you need shelves everywhere to put shit out of their reach. <2yo you need a massive room to house their gigantic toys. Etc. Etc. I might be naive but our eldest is 3yo - potty trained, dressing themselves, getting out of bed, etc. - and while there is loads that I'm sure will change I do feel their spacial needs/use have settled down a bit. Once no.2 nears that age I think it will be a good moment for us to work out what to do with our living situation.

I'm not saying it's the correct call in your case. But thought it was a counter point that might be worth mentioning. Especially as its one you're unlikely to get from this thread or any of the contractors with a vested interest in your project.
