TBH I wouldn't bother, more hassle and compromise than its worth, get a good portable speaker and take it everywhere.

I looked at it then realised that the fancy ones go out of date pretty quickly and the others are just a really expensive bluetooth speaker that don't sound very good so I got a rechargeable DAB radio.

Just seen this. It’s just sand and cement mortar troweled in and then brushed off. It’s actually quite easy once you’ve done a bit. Our builder has kindly done the tricky bits around the doors and windows for me.

Nah - I totally get the point of using lime mortar in old buildings but this has replaced raised sand and cement pointing that has been in the wall for decades without issue. And I wanted it to match the new part of the house.

We don't have a soundsystem but we have speakers - two of these in our bathroom ceiling, with speaker cable running to our kitchen hi-fi (bathroom is off kitchen). Cost £200 for the speakers + cable, definitely worth it.
They aren't big speakers and work fine in our very small bathroom but you'd need bigger in a bigger space.
I'd do the same thing again, if we want to control the sound in the bathroom we cast to the hi-fi and use our phones as remotes. For me being able to listen to music or a podcast in the bath is important...

Worth adding that in wall/ceiling speakers have come on a lot. We have a pair of these in our kitchen and they sound great. The grills are paintable so they're pretty subtle. Ceiling speakers are obviously more subtle, but they don't line up with your ears in the same way...
You can get bluetooth ceiling speakers which are also Google Home/Alexa compatible so they just need power.

That's good to hear

Used to have in-ceiling speakers attached to an original Sonos ZP100 that was in the loft. Speakers are relatively future-proof so once they're installed, you can always update whatever is connected to them.

Nice! That's useful. Yeah I like to be able to listen to music/radio/podcasts. currently we have a collection of Google home devices (gifted) in various rooms but if we're redoing the house I want to have a better solution

Think we've finalised the layout for our house with the architect - had a call with Eckford Chong earlier and went through some of the changes we'd been thinking about. Still a while until things all kick off but really pleased with how it's shaping up.

Built in soundsystems for bathrooms
Depends on the space. My mate did it (DIY) in a top floor flat with loft above in two of his flats. Pretty much the same set up as fox. Both were small bathrooms so he just had a single speaker iirc. Can't remember about the first, but in the second place they definitely had volume controls next to the light switch.
Less hassle than a celling extractor fan. Would definitely recommend.

Like that a lot, but the beam in your "now" pic looks original? You can't remove that if so!
Also, thought that chair was a Rob Parry for a second, that would have really weirded me out as have one in my living room, obviously.

I'm getting on the next wave soon - 60k gardens
as inspired by: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m000ry6w/your-garden-made-perfect
it is indeed. in my case the cost coupled with ceiling height reduction in an already low ceilinged room made it untenable
