• How wide you want to go with the bars?

    Edit: Salsa cowbell/cowchipper deluxe
    Ritchey classic venturemax

  • Nitto M137SSB go up to 54cm? They are also nitto, and therefore lovely but somewhat pricey.

  • Cheaper than Salsa Deluxe bars, they're about £80, Nittos about £65, good shout.

  • I use Suntour power shifters, very affordable on ebay. Have had Riv ones in the past and those also worked great. The Rivendell shifters and ENE ciclo have the same ratcheting internals afaik and are both based on the Suntours.

  • I’m running the SunXCD cranks at the moment with the modern TA rings 40-26 (without pins etc), slightly narrower chainring washers, and a 10 speed drive chain.

Working absolutely fine with no shifting issues, so might be worth considering for a wider range of chainrings?

  • Lovely project!

I never felt comfortable using 9 speed with (ratchetless) friction shifters. The best downtube shifters I've used are Shimano's indexed 7-8 speed ones. 8 speed R400's are still available new, but old 105's are a good low budget option.

  • Don't need that, Spa Cycles have some 46/30 chainset (was a triple crank converted to 3x), even 44//28 etc.

  • Also out of stock.

  • Oh yeah.

  • Think pretty much everything is, and will be for a while.

  • Following, great project

  • +jontea & +crow I am thinking classic wide so more like 46 -48. The Salsas are a tad too expensive. The Ritcheys would be perfect without the ergonomic grip. I tried them on a friends bike and like them but they visually just don't fit the build in my opinion. I might end up with some Nitto M137SSB or B135SSB bars.

+rawmeat Thanks! I did some digging yesterday and came to the same conclussion. I might just get the ENE Ciclo ones.

+WilliamJohn Thats encouraging to hear. Might go for the Sun XCD then because I would prefer 44/28 over 46/30

+Jokke_A I used to ride classic road bikes with 7/8 speed indexed downtube shifters and touring rigs with 9 and 10 speed barends. I agree they always felt really nice and on point. Often better then any modern brifters I had. Here I am going with friction just to be almost free from compatibilty and indexing issues. From what I've read the Dia Compe shifters with the micro ratchet handle 9 and 10 speed quite well.

+edscoble can you point me at the cranks? I am not quite sure which ones you are talking about.

  • Was looking at the Sun xcd earlier, like the fact you can buy other spiders so you can use 110/74 bcd rings or 50.4 bcd, means I could use black chainrings and go sub compact.
I know the Ritchey bars look funky, but that ergo bump just feels right, but hey, we don't build bikes by committee, it's gonna look fantastic, really impressed with your component choices so far. Have you already got the rims?

  • Nope I also just had to realize they are out of stock everywhere... Currently checking options and alternatives.

  • What spoke count do you need? Think Pacenti have 650b 28h in stock.

  • Yes they have the 28h in stock. I need 28h in the front and 32h in the rear. I am contemplating whether I should by the one and hope I will get a 32h from somewhere or buy two 28h and get different rear hub.

  • 28h in 650b should be plenty strong enough, I'd get a 28h rear hub, use the Hope on summat else/flog it/return it.

  • True. The ready made wheel sets from Pacenti are 28h front and back and my Hunt wheels on my gravel touring bike too. They have already survived quite a bit.

Just pulled the trigger on two 28h rims. No I just need to find a different rear hub. Shame about the Hope Hub.

Bitex RAR12 or Novatec F172 seem to tick the all the neccessary boxes at affordable price tags. I think the Bitex are actually the same that Pacenti uses.

  • Yep, they do use the Bitex. I have the Novatec f172, decent hub for the money (exactly the same as the more expensive Ambrosio Zenith).

  • Not as fine looking as VO/Sun though, but functional and well made (by Sugino), I run the 2x version 46/33.

  • Agree, I thought it’s very on point with the Raleigh.

  • Some part updates:
I ended up buying a Bitex RAR12 rear hub. Just dropped it off at Martin / Arkane Wheelworks along with the rims and the dynamo hub. He said he might be able to build them already in the next few days.

For the finishing kit I went with the Nitto Gravel M137SSB and a Planet X Holdsworth Grand Sport seatpost. The bars are 45cm in the hoods and 52cm in the drops which is very similar to what I have on my gravel bike and I am very comfortable with them.
Interestingly enough I almost bough the Velo Orange Grand Cru Long Setback seatpost but went with the Holdsworth to save some money. Now that it is here I realised they are identical besides the engraved logo. So I saved £20 here. Yay me!
While on Planet X I also picked up one of the little Nitto front rack light holders for a fiver.

And finally there is a BLB Mini Front Rack my mom got me for christmas.

Slowly getting really excited to put all of this together. Main missing components are shifters and cranks now.

  • Time for an update. I've been tinkering around in silence for a bit.

First thing: Wheels are done and they are beatiful. Martin / Arkane did a great job. I set them up tubeless with some WTB Resolutes 650b x 42. Looking at the clearance with these knobbies I feel like I could have gone all in for the Crust namesake bubble and get some slick Ultradynamico Cavas 650b x 47.99574838347238[...]. We'll see. Maybe when I need new tyres or in the summer or when I am bored...

Next up: I sticked some parts to the frame and my main goal for now is to get it in a rideable state. I am desperate to try this bike and see if I actually like it before I cash out on some more bling parts. Cranks, pedals, front light and brake levers are placeholders for now. I also found some decent mudguards in the shed. Used them on a 650b build before they will do the job for now.
