The last Bob (sort of, but not really)

  • Used to have 2 Bob frames that were lovely to ride. Sold them in a clear out years back. Always fancied getting myself a bespoke one. Feeling sad that'll never happen now, but also happy that you have such a luscious ride!

  • Thanks.

Bars are all taped up, and it's looking good.

Turns out the chain has been cut too short, so I'll have to get a new one tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get away without having to buy a new cassette.

Black seatpost is really letting the side down, so I need to get on that.

Brakes are still a bit sketchy - I'm going to have a go at getting the wheels dead true, and then tweek the set up.

  • Looks lovely as does the bike cave!

  • I think I've got a silver nitto if you want?
    Or what are you after?

As per chain, what do you mean cut? Can't you add back the missing links? Or were the rest thrown away?

  • Who makes these? Tia

  • Ideally, I'd like a Simworks Beatnick. Happy to look at a Nitto if you've got one for sale.

The Groupset was off e-Bay, so the previous owner had cut the chain to suit. Could be they did it incorrectly, or my chain stays are longer, either way the current chain is too short.

  • Cannondale in the 90s (I think) and now Tektro does it (looking a little different). Mine is the latter.
Thought @Jingle_Jangle may be interested as the crown hanger wasn't clearing the headset. No longer relevant now, top hanger looks really good!

  • Possibly because you're using a long cage derailleur?

Will send more picks of the nitto (a Nitto 65 seatpost)

  • The Simworks Beatnick seems a copy of this Nitto S65.

BTW I'm not 100% convinced to sell, but let's see.

The derailleur came with the group.

I believe the Beatnick is made by Nitto, and they are to all intents and purposes that same, apart for the heart engraving. They seem to be out of stock in most places, but Freshtripe are expecting a delivery in February.

If you want to move the Nitto seatpost along, PM me a price.

  • Quick update:

Visually it’s coming along nicely (apart from the seat post).

The shifting however is all over the place.

As the group set is second hand, I don’t know if I’ve installed it incorrectly, or if one or more of the parts are malfunctioning.

Will start swapping bits out over the weekend.

  • I think you touched on chain length, but if it’s helpful I’m running a KMC 10spd chain of 114 links on a long cage centaur r/m and a 53 /39 centaur chainset (425mm chainstays) and then tension seemed about right (notwithstanding you’re clearly running a triple which might have a impact)?
In other news, looks better every time I see this.

  • I think the problem is a combination of Old Cassette / New Chain - Sloppy right-hand lever and inevitably not the best install by yours truly.

Gonna swap the chain and cassette combo now for the one on my Roberts which works perfectly, see what that does, then take it from there.

In other news - Velo Orange mudguards have arrived, but I want to wait 'till I've sorted out the gearing and brakes before I fit them. Still on the subject of mudguards - Freshtripe have been excellent to deal with - give them your custom people!

  • So, swapping out the chain & cassette from my Roberts has eliminated chain-skip, which suggests that I need to buy a new cassette to match the new chain (Hurrah)!

However, the right-hand shifting is still below-par. I'm going to remove the bar-tape and check the cable run. After that, if necessary I'll try a different shifter.

    Oh, the joys.

  • Which shifters? Only ask in case they have two routes for the cable when exiting the body to the bars? Apparently Campag prefer the lower path that takes the cable towards the ‘back’ of the bars as a more efficient route. At least this is the case on my centaur brifters.

  • They are Veloce shifters, and they do indeed have two routes. I have used the lower path, and routed the cable behind the bars - which is something I don't usually do.

I have removed the bar tape, and this led to an immediate improvement - the tape must have been interfering with the operation of the thumb shifter.

It's still not functioning 100% correctly, but we're heading in the right direction.

  • Quick update. I have found a better seat post, and the gears now function properly.

Gonna tweet the brakes a bit more, before I fit mudguards.

  • mudguards

Which ones? (Sorry if you said already over the pages)

Is there a classy bag to go on the rack?

  • Mudguards are Velo Orange Hammered, Silver.

I am having a bag made by Cory Brenn, should be here soon.

  • What are your plans for tyres?

I assume the 25mm Grand Prix Classics are place holders.

    Surely this needs fatter rubber.

  • Cory Brenn

Had to Google the name... Looks like a great choice!

  • Me too, very classy looking bicycle luggage.

  • What a beauty, did you sell on the condor yet ?

  • Haven't really thought about tyres yet. Will probably swap out the wheels at some point in any case.
