It was fully sheared through at the "stem". Man 1, so putting a hell of a lot of force through the bars in the first lap

Yeah you can definitely see it's broken in the video Hoke posted. Shame the resolution isn't a bit higher so you can see inside the component. I'm fairly sure it's a 3D-printed thin-wall titanium part with a lattice inside; I was interested to see what kind of lattice pattern they'd used!

Looks like thin wall hollow carbon fibre to me. You can just about make out the blue from th ebag used in the moulding process

Ah yes, now I can see. I only saw the live coverage (@Jonny69 I can't watch iPlayer from here I'm afraid) and it didn't look like broken cf, especially the way the bars slided on it seemed like a 'clean disassembly'. Would like to think the manufacturer will give full disclosure on the failure, but chances on that are small. Makes sense it was man1 indeed.

Just 9hours ago Cycingtips ran a story about Bastion's 3D printed stems, which are used on the Australian Sprint bikes. This pursuit handlebar looks to be Argon's own CF job though.

And it has known issues already mentioned up the thread https://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2020/74311r-eng.php

I did notice the blue but assumed not carbon because I'd seen these at the engineering materials conferences leading up to the Olympics, printed in Ti by the likes of Renishaw. I wondered if it was a bond line, because they're not printed in one piece. But it's also not bright inside, which suggests not Ti. It's a tricky part to make in carbon and I'd be a bit disappointed if they had left the bag inside.
*Actually, I think I'd be a bit more disappointed if they were using standard bagging material for an internal bag in a component like that, and not a moulded silicone bag which would give better consolidation. But I accept that I've never worked with composites in the cycle industry so I don't know if that sort of tech has even filtered down yet. Maybe that's why it failed.

That's for a completely different part, and older model of the bike.

After this morning's fall in the 1500m series... just wow. One down, 2 to go 🤞🏼

This does look like standard bagging material, but silicone or PP moulded bags are often used in the cycling industry.
I guess it would be quite hard to remove the bag with those sharp bends and only small holes on the bar ends and bolt holes.
In my opinion, the sharp corners where the recess for the top plate sits are the culprit. Image shows a similar construction in Argon's instruction manual. 4 x M6 bolts at 12Nm is a heck load of compression on a CF part, especially one with such thin walls and seemingly hollow. I would be interested to see the opposing failed part to see if there is a foam filler that has been ripped out.

Seems I may have been incorrect. Here's a screenshot (not mine) showing the parts on Bastion's webpage. So most likely this was 3D printed Ti.

Is there any place to watch all the track events today? I can't seem to find it at all on the BBC coverage for today.

Big gap on their portfolio page right now.

If you have Eurosport you can watch on there.

Hero. Thank you.

Alas, no Eurosport. And the BBC coverage has some, but skips the last couple of hours.

I think it’s funny that the Danes are beating the British at their own game.

Well the coach who is a brit jumped ship when bc wouldnt take his riders to the last Olympics who where putting in better times .
He did mention their start being an area where they'd improved a lot over the last few years, but also suggested that it would probably be even faster if they nailed it just right. They are aiming for a new WR.
