• Metallic blue

  • Unbelievable

  • This kind of blue is high on the list at the moment. Or pearlescent white with red decals, to match the red record 11sp logo's....

I'm going to my painter in one of the next weeks to pick up another frame that he has painted. Will check his color chart than. If anyone has color recommendations, shoot!

  • Looking good - what are the bars?

  • Damn great work on the gagging. Bravo !

  • Chinese carbon bars, got them some years ago. Not sure if I'll use them on the final build.

  • Took the master frame to the frame builder/ painter yesterday, so they can already start with the rechroming of forks and lugs. Also asked him to change the attachments for the shifter cables in the style of the pink Noble, because it looks way better than the classic 'caps' that go over the attachments.

Three more colours on the shortlist: very dark metallic blue on one, than light metallic blue and light champagne gold.

I also dropped of a Pinarello asolo at the painter +- half a year ago, finally it was finished. He takes a lot of time, but damn I like his work. This is the gold
I'm also considering for the master.

  • Small update on the Colnago: frame is still at the painter but I expect it to be ready somewhere in january. In the meantime, I've gathered all parts (record 11 sp 2015 rear derailleur, Athena 11sp 5 bolt carbon cranks, 12sp record front derailleur, San Marco Aspide carbon FX saddle). I'm also changing the Chinese carbon cockpit into decent alu aero Bontrager bars. They were ok for testing, but It will give me more mental peace while riding.

I've touched up the record shifters as they had some minor cosmetical damage. I've also polished the aluminium headset because it will be squeezed between the freshly chromed lugs and forks. I'm in the process of giving the Pro LT stem some black paint and gloss 2K varnish, to get away with the cheap matte finish and make it look more nice. Pictures of all this will follow soon.

  • Another bike got into the workshop some week ago. You can't polish a turd, but at least you can put some effort in cleaning a mediocre french Gitane sportbike. Lower spec bike for it's time but I like the way it looks and the colors. More or less al parts are french and original - huret all over the place. For some reason I enjoy it to rejuvenate all those old parts, no matter if they are high-end or not.

I'll go all-in on cleaning up these bike. It has been dismantled and all parts will be cleaned and polished. Wheel have been disassembled and will be rebuild. Yesterday I've cleaned up the Stronglight cranks and Normandy hubs and filled them with some yellow enamel paint to match the decals.

Next up is polishing the rims and cleaning up the paintwork.

  • You have magic polishing powers so it seems! Nice work.

  • Let's say a polishing wheel mounted on an old bench grinder also helps.

  • The headset on the Master will be a 1" Tange Seiki. They have a matt anodized alu finish from the factory. To blend them in more nicely with the chromed headtube lugs and chromed forks, I polished them to a mirror finish. De-anodized them first, afterwards polished with buffing wheel and polish paste.

  • And I also did a good deal on a set of 2015 Record shifters. They function flawless but managed to buy them for a good price since they had some cosmetical damage from a crash. They got scratched on the lever bodys, gloss varnish on the levers was scratched and one of the logo's was chipped. The body's sanded out quite nicely and I've touched up the logo on the levers. After some sanding a fresh layer of 2K varnish and they look fresh again.

  • Also did some work on the stem and bars. The stem is a Pro LT and they come in that cheap matte black 'structured' finish that tells you it's a cheap stem. Inspired by the polished black Zipp stems, I decided to paint it. Base coat, 4 layers of black, wet sanding in between and 2K gloss varnish to finish. Looks a lot better in my opinion.
As told before I've also ditched the chinese carbon bars and swapped them for a pair of Bontrager VR-CF alu aero bars with internal routing. Same story with the film finish, so also here a layer of gloss clearcoat. You can see the difference clearly at the stem clamp area, which I obviously masked.

The outfront Wahoo mount also got sprayed to get the same finish as the cockpit.

First pictures is stock finishing (not my stem).

  • Really impressed by all of this.

  • Very impressive. Do you have some advice on how you went about the sanding? Which 2k varnish did you use and did you only apply it partially? I‘m interested cause I wanted to touch up some paint chips on a clearcoated cf frame.

  • My god you don't mess about do you! Well done, makes me very impatoent to await the final build.

  • Superb work!
    Subbed

  • I've used this one several times: https://www.nonpaints.com/be/2k-blanke-lak-hoogglans-in-spuitbus-spraymax-250ml-400ml. They come in different options: matt/Semi-Gloss/gloss. Be aware that it consists of two components, so once you 'open' a spraycan, you can only use it for a limited time ( 24-48h or so). The stem got one coat of primer (grey) followed by a wetsand with 800 and 1500. Then 4 coats of black, in between wet sanding with 1500. 'Sanding' sound quite rough though, especially the last coats only got a gentle wipe. Than 2 coats of 2K clearcoat without sanding.

For the levers, I didn't applied it partially but gave the full levers some coats to get a nice finish. How small are the areas that you want to touch up? Cause if it are only small chips, a spraycan might not be very suitable.

  • This lever refurb is top notch. I love that you painted in the C. Great work.

  • Those Tange Seiki headsets are a great update. They look nice on older bikes and have a low stack height. Used many of them myself.

Could you explain how you removed the anodising? Do you sand it off? Or do you strip them with chemicals?

  • The stem looks longer after the finish, or is that the famous matter of perspective?

  • That first photo is an example of the finish he was referring to but not his actual stem. Great work on the refurb / polishing!

  • Thank you, I should be more patient reading longer posts.
