  • I really think this highlights the Independent doing a terrible job. If the sentence in question was so obviously antisemetic, I’m really baffled as to why the journalist didn’t call this out with Peak during the interview? Or after the fact, when it came to writing the article - it still wasn’t highlighted as an antisemetic conspiracy theory, instead they linked Amnesty International’s report on Israel US police training and stated that an Israeli police force spokesperson denied the claim. I know if I read that and saw the AI link I’d think it gave credibility to the preceding statement. I’m assuming someone higher up then reads the article before it’s published?

Then only after publishing the article, the Independent removes the Amnesty International link altogether.

Apparently the Labour MP Kate Osborne also tweeted the article along with praise for Maxine Peak. Has she been reprimanded in anyway?

  • isn't the bigger lesson here that Twitter is an absolute toilet?

  • It's a toilet and unfortunately the correct way to avoid an over reaction in the press is to over react yourself, but if it does actually avoid an over reaction and leads to a higher chance of a Labour government in the future, maybe the ends justify the means. Also she should probably see the eggshells and tread appropriately unless she's very sure of what she's retweeting and how it either is, isn't or could be seen to be antisemitic.

  • The world would honestly be a better place without it

  • Are we at criticism of Israel= anti semitism again?

That renowned anti semitic organisation, Amnesty International, has been highlighting the issue of US Police being trained in Israel for years.

This. Fuck Starmer to the absolute hilt. Centrist Dad cunt

  • isn't the bigger lesson here that Twitter is an absolute toilet?

    A complete latrine

  • Have a read of this, already posted ^^^^

Yeah sorry it’s on Twitter - I’m not a fan either

  • she should probably see the eggshells and tread appropriately unless she's very sure of what she's retweeting and how it either is, isn't or could be seen to be antisemitic.

    Well said

  • I don't think she should've been sacked, but when such things are obviously being scrutinised so closely it's just a bit daft to not scrutinise everything properly yourself to pre empt any issues that might arise and the politics, no matter what you might think about them, that could be brought up in what you do.

  • Not that I'm saying all the anti semites should hide for a bit to not be found out, they should rightly be fucked, but why make yourself an easy target.

  • It's doubly unfortunate given how a Tory win last December had the happy side effect of making Labour's incessant and ingrained antisemitism disappear over night. Used to be a new scandal every day. It's almost as if....
What else could Starmer do? Let it drag on for a few days or weeks like in the good old days, while Johnson gets away with murder?

  • He made a point of "any of this will not be tolerated". It's frustrating.
Teaching police and training them in a military manner, awful.
Not thinking "hang on, this might not be quite alright", an easy mistake to make if you're either racist or not capable of seeing how this might be seen.

Also: a bit mad the independent didn't double check / pull the comment.

  • Labour's incessant and ingrained antisemitism disappear over night

I mean it's not as if there's been anything else going on for the media to focus on

  • Amnesty International: We never reported that “neck kneeling” is taught by Israelis to US
The organisation has clarified that its report does not constitute evidence to support the allegations at the centre of the sacking of Rebecca Long-Bailey

    https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2020/06/amnesty-international-we-never-reported-neck-kneeling-taught-israelis-us

  • ^^Of course, the Mail and the Telegraph sadly had to sit on all those stories they had, there's just not room. A bit like all the stories about immigrants they no longer had room for after the referendum.

  • White Americans have been killing and brutalising the black community for generations.

To insinuate that they only figured out how to do this because the Israelis/Jews helped them frankly reeks of antisemitism.

I can't really comprehend how anyone can't see this.

  • Considering dropping the net zero target of 2030:
    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/keir-starmer-net-zero-target-2030-labour-climate-change-a9586971.html

I don't want to see it dropped but get that they can't deliver it in one term either, so the date would have to be changed which would be OK rather than scrapping the ambition completely

  • Thought this was a sharp take on Starmer’s strategy so far

  • So the old debate of get power for its own sake or have values that aren't compromised in the pursuit of power? I guess people are seeing in Starmer what they want to because he's been a touch sheepish so far as leader (until RLB). Also did the Tweet thread disregard that Corbyn was pretty close to power during the end stages of the Brexit stuff in HoC? My feeling is the focus on competence could be easily undercut by bs pushed in the press to give an image of chaos even if there wasn't any. He's got a huge task on his hands.

  • Not surprising, since he's basically a tory.

  • yeah, starmer's doing great. Really winning over the right-wing crowd.

  • Haven't read the actual interview but I suspect Farage is being disingenuous on what I suspect was a nuanced opinion.
