Cycling in the time of Corona

  • Yep it’s the way to go

  • The only times I've crashed on the road have been in Mallorca, Gran Canaria and, in the UK, on my Brompton. If I stick to the UK and stay off bikes with small wheels I reckon I'll be OK.

  • What's with people riding solo into icy Kent/ Essex today? Doinks.

  • What’s peoples thoughts on cycling with a mask given the current transmission rates in London?

Did a loop from Lewisham to Lambeth Bridge today (first time going out in 2021) and got a bit prang counting the amount of pedestrians and other cyclists I came in any kind of proximity of when the figures say 1/30 could be carriers 😳

  • The mask doesn't help you much if you come into contact with a carrier. The point is there is a 1/30 chance you are a carrier and a mask will help reduce the chances of spreading it.

It's more important to keep your distance. Ride well out from the gutter and you shouldn't get very close to many pedestrians. Other cyclists pulling up next to me at traffic lights I've found more of a problem although I've chosen not to cycle at the moment.

  • "Just because you could doesn't mean you should."

  • Due to the temperature I have a face covering anyway when out cycling or walking .

That said I now choose to go for a walk in daylight hours then hit the turbo earlier or later in the day.

Mainly due to slippery roads but I also feel I need to do my part in adherence to the lockdown rulea and try not spend much time out side. It sucks but that's life currently.

  • If runners/cyclist would stop spitting/snotting into the road while there are people around them I'd be very happy :/ Can't believe it has to be explained to people that it's firstly disgusting and secondly extremely dangerous and selfish. I've had a few near misses from globs of spit which just raises my anxiety to an even higher level than it usually is.

  • I did my first longer ride yesterday, mainly to check if covid has broken something inside. It was wonderful in Zone 1 after 10pm, open world unlocked, no traffic cheat enabled.

  • Interesting speaking to a friend about this - he thought this was a big deal. I definitely don't but it does speak to the likely mismatch between the interpretations of rules by cyclists and non cyclists.

  • Ha! Boris Cycled (or was driven?) to a park not near his house and then commented that it seemed a lot of people were there and wondered if they were taking the rules seriously....amaze.

  • Is it 7 miles from Downing street to the Olympic Park?

  • Google maps says yes.

  • Is there another Olympic Park or Downing street that I don't know of? I had a look on Google maps and it's 5.3miles straight, and a bit of wiggling along embankment, up through the City, Viccy Park direction only seems to be 6 miles max. I didn't think it was that far.

  • Johnson's useless so he probably got lost on the way there, making it seven miles.

  • It seems that the 7 miles comes from the Evening Standard journalist who broke the story. Not that it matters. Though No.10 spokesperson is now saying he drove (was driven) there.

  • I was bored enough to try this and couldn't find a route shorter than 6.7 miles to actual open space in Olympic Park.

  • A broken bone will be assessed as a category 3 call with the ambulance service. Current wait times are around 8 hours for this category. Do you really want to wait for 8 hours in the cold and wet for the ambulance to arrive then go to a hospital that is rammed full of COVID patients and to take resource from treating them?

  • resource

Are orthopaedic imaging and orthopaedic surgical department doctors not working in that capacity anymore at the moment?

I agree you definitely had to take an Uber to hospital, even if you broke a bone falling down the stairs in your flat.

  • cold and west

We're not necessarily more accident prone out here.
Everyone should also avoid injury in the East, North & South.

  • Are orthopaedic imaging and orthopaedic surgical department doctors not working in that capacity anymore at the moment?

My hematologist friend has being doing shifts in Covid wards rather than her usual which a few years ago was mostly sickle cell related.

  • Let’s start with unsafe workplaces, and employers who flout the ‘rule’ and force / coerce employees into situations where lives at placed at risk yeah? Then move on from there.
Edit. Sorry, not a dig at you but this stuff boils my piss. Of course, wear a mask but fuck me, having walked (on my daily socially distance exercise) past two building sites today with no distancing or masks in evidence. It’s businesses that are swinging the lead and the government is fixated on blaming everyone except them.

  • The 15-minute rule for close contact is arbitrary (based on custom and practice rather than empirical evidence). One-metre or two-metre distancing rules (which are derived as much from economic models of lost productivity as from scientific evidence of protection) do not mean that if people keep within these distances, they are safe. The rules mean only that people farther apart are less likely to infect one another.

On this basis, surely everyone must wear masks whenever possible, regardless of the activity they're undertaking?
