  • the plusnet connection here does seem to have frequent drop-outs for a few seconds so probably 100% on the money. however they always have come back up i just hard reset both lights and now I can't connect them to the network with my phone or laptop. grrr

  • Your WiFi is with whatever router PlusNet gave you? It may just be crappy... I hate to suggest solving the problem with more hardware, but even if my internet is shit my lights keep working because my local network is good.

The HTTP server in the Elgato lights is in the light... so as long as you have WiFi and DHCP... it should all be good even without the internet.

  • re-installed control center, deleted devices from router dhcp device page, rebooted router, laptop then hard reset lights and re-paired and back to working... shall see if it survives tonights shutdown

  • my streaming setup is still here at my mums place as i'm still down here all the time, but will be moving down here to our own new place in couple of weeks where it'll be joining my er-x / toughswitch / uni-fi network setup which should be more robust.

  • plusnet default router is a shiter ime. I swapped mine out to an old BThub I had left around from a prev contract. much more stable, with better coverage

  • yeah, this one has had to be pushed onto two very specific firmware versions that are only available by requesting them on their support forum to stop it dropping the internet connection. there's clearly an issue on their network they're not acknowledging as the support thread has hundreds of pages of people asking for it.

  • trying to get 4k from my ps4 and digital camera through switches was a nightmare. all the cables need to be the right spec and a lot of the switches say they do certain modes when they don't.

And as you predicted, I plugged in cheap 2-1 HDMI switch and get nothing through it, either 4K@60Hz from work laptop or HD/SD from personal laptop. Cables are known good cables too, but when I get time I'll swap things around to see if I can get a working configuration.

Elgato stuff delayed another week (now due 16th), any further delays and I'll cancel the Key Light and get the rest delivered (which is in stock) and source the Key Light from elsewhere. It's not urgent but I'm not holding on forever.

  • Ordered the Key Light from somewhere else and Scan are shipping the rest of my stuff. Almost time to ditch the crappy iPhone headphones mic.

  • Finally pulled the plug on the LG 34" 5K2K monitor, and I'm moving my U2415 to the side to be used as a tertiary display (secondary is my MBP 14 screen, which sits/will sit below the main display) and ordered a refurb Ergotron LX to go with it (for 1/3rd the price of new)

In the meantime found about 10 U2415 monitors without stands for £79.99 each on eBay. If you accept A- displays there's even a few for 10 quid less. Very good deal.

  • Nice.

And that reminds me... I'm still waiting for an OLED 27" to drop in price but it's going to be a while, there's still only one on the market and it's way too pricey right now https://www.lg.com/ca_en/desktop-monitors/lg-27ep950-b

Unfortunately the price point ($3k) is aimed to be competitive against Sony X300 colour professional monitors (think $30k) rather than a gaming monitor ($250-500) or professional monitor ($1k). So it's going to be a long wait before ubiquity makes them affordable.

  • way too pricey right now

From the guy now known as, Mr 70k Kitchen, I dread to think how much it costs. :P

BTW: Anyone looking to shift a decent 24" ish monitor?

  • I dread to think how much it costs

    That's OK, I wrote it in there... it's $3k.

Which is about the price of a fridge... quite affordable really.

  • But does it have a cheese drawer with it's own climate?

It's not really a fridge without that, it's just a big chill box.

  • Anyone looking to shift a decent 24" ish monitor?

It's hard to beat that Dell U2415 for £79.99 offer on eBay, if you happen to have some kind of a VESA arm for it.

  • The Behringer UMC22 is a decent budget option, and phantom is a very usable option.

I've set up home studios /YouTube studios for several friends. I use mostly Chinese sourced USB mixers/sound cards, and although the casings are cheap and narky, the electronic and sound quality is excellent. I'll post links to buy when I get a chance. The case can always be upgraded with solid wood cheeks. A doddle to make if you have a home router.

  • Sorry, thats a reply to two pages back 'which USB mixer'. Unless you are planning to lay down professional multitrack recordings, cheap 4/8 track USB mixers are the way to go. Easy to set up and use. Ideal for YouTubers.

  • I might have a spare Dell 25 ultrasharp going spare soon.

Big jump in resolution compared to most 24s.

  • As if I put food in my fridge. Fridges are for beer.
Food comes from um some kind of little elf that lives in the kitchen.

  • Yeah, let me know. Thanks

  • Thanks for the tip. I'd need one with a stand though - don't want to piss about with monitor arms.

  • Any recommendations for 37" monitor (with stand) doesn't need to be 4k, but if one is out there...

  • 37" and not even 4k? I'd go at least 5k at that size if you can.

After using a LG 5k monitor for a while I really struggle with low ppi screens. The eye strain difference is huge. I'd go smaller monitor but higher ppi any day of the week. If you need screen real estate, maybe compliment it with a lower ppi secondary monitor

  • Got my Elgato delivery (Key Light, Wave 1 mic, mic arm, Stream Deck Mini).

Had to hook up the Stream Deck Mini to my personal laptop as my work laptop is Linux (no official support), but I'll be checking out stuff like https://timothycrosley.github.io/streamdeck-ui/ later.

Light is lovely and certainly made a difference on my morning call and it's nice to be able to adjust it so easily, don't have to worry so much about the light coming in from the window or faff with the blinds so much.

Can't tell how much nicer the Mic is over my iPhone headphones.

Going to move a few bits around now that most things are here, monitor needs to move over slightly, Key Light needs to more central, mic arm moved back a bit (hence monitor move) and then I need to get the work laptop off the desk to give me more room.

And then I'll be pretty much done.

Record yourself / your Zoom call / etc. ?
