  • Okay, maybe not the best analogy. Am getting rather tired of these 'oh but flu' bores, though.

  • I suppose the worst case scenario is that this does become like the flu, endemic and kills a fuck ton of people every year.

Or like Tuberculosis, malaria, HIV or any other of the shitty illnesses that kill millions each year.

  • US figures will be like Japan’s I suspect when scaled for population size.

Got any more info on this?

  • wrt Japan, this is interesting, if tentative: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/26/world/asia/japan-coronavirus.html

  • Italy would expect to see ~225 deaths a day attributable to flu during the season.
    https://www.epicentro.iss.it/influenza/flunews#mortalita

Okay, maybe that number should be lower, and we should all wash our hands more and wear facemasks more, like they do in places like Japan.

Deaths in Italy attributable to COVID-19 are running at ~600-700 per day at the moment. That's not just the fucking flu.

Also, hospitalisation rates, ventilation needs yadda yadda are all off the charts at the moment.

  • tldr: it's coming?

  • All you need to do is wait a few days to see the larger death numbers pop up - they're growing daily. Deaths will always lag behind, I think.

Also, they're not actually that low, they're only low in comparison with the more 'mature' countries like China, Italy, Spain, Iran, France. Germany on the other hand is still quite low: over 50% of the cases detected in the US, but something like 20% of the deaths.

That being said, the numbers of infected people can't really be used to argue much one way or the other, as it's completely dependent on who and how and how much you test anyway.

  • Or it's already there. Maybe. Like I said, very tentative.

It raises both negative issues (lack of testing, lack of government intervention to force social distancing) and positive (cultural forms of social distancing, school being closed for quite a while). But there seems to be the feeling that it's coming.

  • Yeah they are annoying and there are too many. I tried to gently explain why it is not like flu, that even if it is "only" 10x more deadly, there is no vaccine.

At least I got through to one person on that thread, his mates choose to stay ignorant cos of "the media". eyeroll

  • Incredible...

  • I suppose the worst case scenario is that this does become like the flu, endemic and kills a fuck ton of people every year.

This is what has been scaring me...

  • The government have asked local authorities to house all homeless people and people in hostels by the weekend.

If it's that easy then what the actual fuck?!

  • Clearly society only gives a fuck when the homeless are seen as an infection risk. I'm fuming.

  • I thought the homeless are offered a place in a hostel ( in Wales anyway), unless they're using drugs, which a lot of them are.

  • I was in the shower. Heard clapping. Came out to kitchen window and clapped also.

My upstairs nurse neighbour thanked me. I assume for the clapping although she was also giggling at my semi

naked body so who really knows.

  • We maybe need a separate clapping thread. Otherwise this escalates to people clapping everywhere. The horror. What have we become?

  • giggling / gagging

    potato / potato

  • This is not the time to get the clap.

  • I hope this is going to come to Northern Ireland too, they get no cash at the moment from people as nobody is out... I normally gave something to one every Saturday in town she said it has completely dried up.

At least she has a bank account (legally here, trafficked) so I can send some with bacs.

  • Even in greater Manchester where there is the ‘bed every night’ scheme, it can’t be done.

Some refuse and others find it more chaotic/dangerous than being on the street.

  • I had originally written "my upstairs neighbour thanked me for the clap"

  • I still can't read it without thinking "clap cheeks for the NHS"

  • But the question is can you get clapped twice?

  • You can definitely get the clap twice and I definitely clapped more than twice.
