    ?

I just looked at this and literally the first post I saw was talking about fake news  🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Sweden's approach doesn't seem to be too far from Britain's. Some social distancing measures like banning big events, but schools mostly open and not even trying to test every suspect anymore but trying to slow it spreading. Finland is on the same path, but a bit behind, schools and everything mostly open, working from home and other social distancing adviced, big events banned, toilet paper sold out.

Yebbut as you and I know all too well, bits of Finland have far more reindeer than people and we do have our fair share of exceptionalism as well. I would like to know if the Finnish and Swedish approaches have something to do with population density.

Also, Finns will just cut n paste Swedish policy as per usual.

Are you in Helsinki? Bog roll shelf pics or it didn´t happen. ;)

  • Poland shutting borders

If the trucks carrying stuff stop moving it's going to get quite Mad Max very quickly.

  • Can anybody link to any footage of those Chinese testing and isolation facilities as described by the NYT health correspondent or are telly crews not allowed?

  • It’s China, they have to stand in a line, if they cough or sweat they get shot.

Then those deaths don’t have to counted in their statistics.

Fair to say UK strategy so far closer to the first one, Norway's closer to the fourth?

  • Given that surfaces has been mentioned many times on here, I thought I´d post the relevant World Health OrganiSation advice:

"It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose."

Went to two Lidls last night with son and heir to buy coffee filters and alcohol, forgot to buy both as he kept banging on about his precious courgette rööschti recipe. Turned out too soggy. Still, as I ate I got depressed because we don´t live in Bern.

  • Who else is finding themselves following all these live updates and feeling incredibly anxious? I think I’m going to have to checkout of the newsfeed for the day and detach a little.

I started the day reading this and it’s so very worrying.

  • Ukraine

Which is a lousy, was off to Chernobyl on the 3rd. Wondering if Ryanair and Hotels .com will refund.

  • Yeah biggest worry is just how unprepared we are regardless of how good our approach is.
Also feels like most don’t grasp the potential here.
I asked a friend how many deaths he thought there would be in the U.K. he said 500, this shocked me. I’m either massively over worrying or people are a long way from the reality.

  • If I eventually have to care for someone, will a Fingertip Pulse Oximeter be of any use? Thinking of setting up a Gus Fring style personal hospital at home.

As Harris was quoted as saying at the end of the story, the flaw in the simulations is that some dots should disappear.

  • Possibly but what will you do with that information?
Bit like everyone panic buying thermometers, you don’t need a thermometer to know you are running a fever.

  • For anybody who doesn't understand why schools aren't closing now.

  • Geriatric consultant has said to me their fear is that the high level advisers underestimate how stretched the NHS and social care are already, since any strategy is influenced heavily by what they think the system can cope with.

  • I was just wondering about buying a thermometer... I know when i have a fever but would it be useful to know how high (eg to relay info over the phone) or to know what direction it's heading in?

  • Of course it makes sense to have a thermometer. Get one if you can, just don’t buy 10 or something.

  • Yeh I’m with you.

I worry that as a society we’ve had decades of the media telling us things were an emergency when they actually weren’t. And now there is a situation that is very high risk, a lot of people are just shrugging it off as another overreaction. I’ve noticed this amongst friends and family.

I found myself in this bizarre role reversal with my Grandmother a day ago, because it’s normally her telling me I’m going to die from Ebola/knife crime or whatever the latest Daily Mail headline is. But here I was, trying to get her to take this seriously and make significant adjustments to her daily life. She told me I was just panicking over nothing.

I’ve since had an argument with my family because I think it is totally irresponsible to visit my grandparents who are 87 and 90 years old, when it’s very possible we could pass the virus on to them. They went ahead with a party last night of 50+ people. I didn’t go.

Personally I think this is where the U.K. government response or at least the way they are communicating their choices, doesn’t line up with what is looking very likely to happen in the next few weeks and I think a lot of people are going to be shocked.

  • Please let me know if you are actually able to find one. Amazon and every supermarket I’ve looked in has been sold out.

On eBay, people are selling £40 thermometers for over £120. One sold for £450!

  • We’re in a similar situation; it’s my grandmas 90th on Friday. She’s in the early to mid stages of dementia and it’s all she’s fixated on for the last 12-18 months.

The party organised for Saturday is cancelled but the biggest issue is trying to get her to stay inside. She doesn’t understand why and keeps forgetting the party is cancelled / Coronavirus is a thing.

    It’s heartbreaking for my mum.

I think a few of us will head over there on Friday as we will have been isolated for over a week by then.

  • Singapore is interesting (I looked because I'd a trip booked there in May).

They appear to be forensically investigating the transmission path (see link for an example). Whether they are able to do this because of the resources they have and the smallish numbers of identified cases, or the nature of the society/population, I don't know. However, the info might inform the government strategy.

  • Wow very similar. It was my Grandfather’s 90th, he has early onset of dementia but he decided himself that he didn’t want to go and wanted to cancel. My Grandmother and rest of the family still went ahead with it all though.

I can see why it’s heartbreaking for your mother and all involved too.
