People are clearly reading the same shitty forum or wechat groups.
Intriguing to see that Singapore has had more cases than HK.
One thing I’ll add is that the supermarket queues are longer than the bubble tea ones for the first time ever.

Japan, on the other hand, seems pretty calm.
I mean there are no facemasks for sale anywhere but no-one seems too stressed (gaisensha aside) .
I didn’t go to Yokohama, though, and there may be a bit tetchy. -

Apparently some of my wife's east asian looking friends receive quite a bit of abuse in public when wearing facemasks.

Saw a few people on my flight yesterday wearing facemasks.
Given it was from Lodz, a small industrial city in Poland, to Stansted it seemed a bit unnecessary.

My Polish colleague is currently in isolation in a military hospital in Poland as he was in Wuhan to visit his wife's family for the new year celebrations. He was interviewed on national TV last week, so it's clearly newsworthy in Poland too.
Why wouldn't you take precautions like that on a flight though? You're going to be in close contact with lots of people for a couple of hours in a sealed environment.

I've taken to wearing a mask in the last year, I always get sick after a long haul flight...

I was under the impression that unless it’s a full on respirator, a mask would do nothing to stop the wearer catching things but rather stopped them spreading things?

Wearing a face mask won't stop you getting coronavirus.
Regular thorough hand washing and not touching your nose/mouth/face is the best plan.

Apparently some people have been putting face masks on their dogs, even though they can't catch a coronavirus.
I tend to think that the best thing to do in these situations, is exactly what the experts do themselves. You don't see medics wearing face masks outside of the hospital because they know its for keeping stuff in, not out.

Face mask graphics are from SCMP, they have more here: https://multimedia.scmp.com/infographics/news/china/article/3047038/wuhan-virus/index.html?src=article-launcher

Ironically the face mask is probably quite good at preventing this?
Until you take it off.

Honestly I'm just glad we have an excuse to wear respirator masks in public now. I'm really digging the whole scifi dystopian vibe.
Coupled with ridiculous shit like this, I am FINALLY living in the fashion future I always dreamed of:

There seems to be some value in people with coronavirus wearing them, essentially because they catch any snot, even if they can't completely stop transmission. But the problem then comes when you take them off, they become a lovely little parcel of coronavirus and if not disposed of properly can spread it.
I'm actually working on coronavirus preparedness, response and communications at work (large London university). The steps that actually work are hand washing, keeping away from people who might have the virus (2 metres minimum, but further away if they're coughing/sneezing) and isolating people who may have it. We're encouraging our schools to keep a room vacant with a door that can be closed, so if someone presents with possible infection the advice is keep away from them, tell them to go into the room, shut the door and ask them to call NHS 111 and open the windows if possible...

Given the importance of proper hand washing and the cursory/derisory/non-existent hand washing I see every time I go into the gents I reckon we're all fucked.

I carry hand gel and use it after touching anything that another person might have touched.

The quarantined people at arrowe park hospital accommodation block will be allowed home from this Thursday if they remain free of any temperature anomalies.

Yeah. I just thought it was interesting that a side affect from the mask could be beneficial to people like me who are serial nail biters, even if the main proposed benefit is tenuous unless you are actually infected.

I flew from Krabi to Heathrow via Bangkok on Thursday. So many face masks at BKK. Loads of masks on the 12.5 hour flight from Bangkok to London. The cabin crew all had masks, they were also wearing two pairs of gloves, one latex pair, one plastic pair.
I didn't bother with a mask for the reasons already pointed out previously. Was a weird flight though.
If I sneeze at work this week I reckon I might clear the office.

I had to put in writing that I left China more than 14 days ago before some of my colleagues in London would attend a meeting with me...
