Allegedly not at all. It's thought SARS-CoV-2 is inactivated by normal swimming pool chlorine etc. The infection risk is probably in the changing room, door handles etc.

Chlorine is like Dettol, right Trump?

And talking to people at the ends of lanes. I think that's the biggest problem as there are generally a bunch of people that sit at the end of the lanes in between sets. Not everyone does one big long set with no rests.

I think the idea is if you need a break you get out and stand in a designated spot.

Re: gyms. Mine reopened back in March and at first every other machine was fenced off, showers were closed, pools closed, class numbers limited to 60%, masks needed... Then they opened all the machines, pools, showers, only instructors needed masks... Now the only thing is that we have to show our health code on the way in to the building and have our temperature taken, and some of the gyms won't put the air con on (this is quite common in summer here though, gah). The machines get wiped down but presumably with a damp rag and no Dettol or anything. I refuse to use the swimming pools as they're full of old people spitting. I also don't shower at the gym as I can't deal with the old people shouting at each other at the top of their voices in shanghainese.
Of course this may all change as we're about to have a second wave...

Ugh, that sounds unsafe.
People spitting in pools is gross even with the bleach in the water.

I despise people spitting and I think the gov is super irresponsible for not taking the opportunity to do a public education thing around spitting... But no, let's blame imported salmon rather than upset the old people who think that spitting is good for you.

It seems logical that after Beijing, cities like Shanghai are likely to have similar lockdowns soon, doesn't it?
Culture of spitting is odd. Why would it be 'good for you', and even if it were, why can't they quickly go to the bathroom/toilet and spit there?
-

Other cities have been locked down for ages, and huge disruptive measures in place to protect Beijing (all flights diverted, even more massive police presence than normal) so for Beijing to be locked down is worrying. Friends there are just trying to carry on as normal if their housing compounds are open (so far only 27 locked down).
Spitting is "good for you" because having it inside you is bad, and why should they have to inconvenience themselves for other people? The mentality of this demographic is really quite appalling, even when I try to keep the reasons why in mind.

When I was in Shanghai many moons ago they were having a public advertisement drive saying no spitting. Didn't seem to be making any difference. Lung oysters everywhere and the constant sound of loud hawking, even in restaurants.

Haha, it's maybe slightly better than that but even official coronavirus advice is "wear a mask, wash your hands, stay at home". Local loudspeaker dude wandering about yesterday was just blaring on about masks, ironically he had his mask on his chin...

Silly bugger. Should have had it over the end of the loudspeaker, obvs.

I don't know why people think this is satire. My girlfriend is a nanny for a 'well off' family and it sounds very familiar.

It's a clever visualisation but cherry-picks the other causes of death, e.g. cancer, heart disease, traffic accidents etc would still dwarf COVID-19 over the time period
Also I'm a hub apparently, but a pretty rapid one.
