If you use a wood burner (rather than an open fire) the fumes go straight up the chimney.

We are surrounded by woodland that we manage in a sustainable fashion, so I don't feel any great qualms about burning well seasoned wood - ours is all air dried for 2 years or more.

Wood burners are fucking evil things. May as well run 6 diesel trucks continuously overnight, same PM2.5 emissions.

Depends on the fuel used, efficiency of the burner, if the burner is being used correctly etc etc. Our wood is around 12% water which is well below the 20% that is usually the marker for dry wood, the stove is 80% efficient and is run hot for better combustion.

But hey ho, oversimplification of complex issues is great. Even better when most of our heating comes from a ground source heat pump which is supplemented with an array of solar pv panels.
