I reduced it gradually over years. Think I stopped having sugar in my coffee when I still lived with my folks >20 years ago. I weened myself off sugar on my cereal a bit after that. I used to eat chocolate bars and drink energy drinks and Pepsi while sat on my arse in the office here 10 years ago, but in the last ~8 years that very rarely happens. I couldn't go to a supermarket without buying a choc snack or ice cream or cake or all of the above but now I can walk through the aisles and none of that stuff has anywhere near the appeal. I still race with shitloads of sugar involved and of course I still have the odd cravings, usually after a series of late nights or long work days but generally speaking the sweetest stuff I have these days is fruit/yoghurt in a bowl. I did move to Pepsi Max many years ago but in the last year I've managed to quit drinking that too. It kind of happened while I was trying to lose weight as well as trying to avoid single-use plastic containers. "Don't drink calories" is a useful moto and then it's a case of just trying hard to avoid until you no longer fancy the items.

we adapted the plan, not buying the proprietary protein shake powder, just opting for musashi brand, and loads of fresh fruit and veg. I tended to have bacon and eggs nearly every day, which is lucky because bacon.
It wasn't a diet as such, more of a change of eating habits. We still stick to that sort of meal tapering (big breakfast, medium lunch and small dinner) and at least 1 hour activity/exercise a day -

The Blood Sugar Diet is worth a read (even if you are not pre-diabetic). It's similar to the 5:2.

There's some quite useful info on the Diet Doctor site.
The headaches might be something like this...

fresh fruit and veg
Really?
You see that's something I struggled with. I used to eat a lot of fruit and other than berries, the net carbs from most made it impossible to eat any. Likewise having so few vegetable options was a pain.
Same mate is now doing a quazi-fasting thing where he just eats one nice meal in the evening. Seems to be working. Pretty slow results, but it is pretty simple and flexible.

Haha
reaches for bourbon breakfast milkshake
I did get headaches, at the time I thought it was related to riding my bike in the heat but looking back I think it was sugar withdrawal.
It sure as hell wasn't from a lack of carbs!
