Bent QR stuck in wheel

Posted on
  • Before I make things worse. Any clues how best to solve this.
The QR in my front wheel (DT Swiss Spline R23) is bent and wont come out. I think it's bent on the non skewer side, but could be both sides. I have access to @dbr 's extensive array of cutting and grinding gear but though it could be easier to remove the whole axle then knock it out?

The skewer is a goner so happy to destroy it in the process, but ideally not the wheel. I've taken the end cap off on one side and as far as it can go on the other.

    Any suggestions welcome -

  • Push it out with another skewer?

  • The bit sticking out is slightly bent so wont go through easily. I hit it repeatedly with a heavy rubber mallet. Could be seized inside I guess.

Not gonna work. Steel hammer time.

What's the bearing system in that? Cartridge? If so bashing the axle will result in bearing removal on one side which is kinda fine. You can then replace the bearing and axle. Or get the QR out somehow, maybe with a press.

  • Yeah, sealed cartridge bearing. I was thinking that, but didn't want to be battling against a little c-clip or something like that.

Don't use those rude words with me!

Hit it with a proper hammer.

  • The first time I flew with a bike I left the skewers in and they were bent on arrival. Pretty sure I hammered them as straight as possible and then used a vice to grip it and pulled the wheel so it came it through the other side.

  • I haven't seen a design with a retaining clip but yeah maybe.

Sure there's an exploded diagram somewhere.

    It's whacking time.

  • If you clamp the axle and hit the QR the QR should give up before the bearings do.

  • Put the wheel back in the fork.
Open the quick release skewer and tap it towards the wheel with your rubber mallet. The skewer should move a bit. You might see the bent bit on the opposite side come out a bit, you may be able to straighten it with a bit of fiddling. Once it is straight, and you know it moves a bit, close the skewer lever, this will pull the skewer back again.
If it was bent at the threaded bit it might now come right out. It may be bent inside or seized, so a bit of lube squirted in might help.
Open the lever and put something ( a spanner?) between the q/r and the drop out. Close the skewer. It should move again. Open the skewer and put something a bit thicker (a bigger spanner?) under the q/r and repeat. Gradually using the cam on the skewer and thicker spacers it will come out, but it will be free pretty soon without too much more application.

  • That sounds like good advice, but too late, I hit it with a big hammer! Got the axle out but the skewer became even more jammed in place. I'll get a new axle this week.

  • Clamp axle in axle clamp in vice, bash qr from other end.

    Moar bashing!

  • If it’s bent at the threaded side and not seized, just push the lever end as far into the axle as possible, hacksaw the bent bit off and pull the non bent bit out surely?

  • Tap an old allen key through if its still tight . Or a big adjustable infront of the qr and hit that.
