  • Dry & just elbow grease.

  • We never did organise a pre 50's ride this summer, we should plan something, I would love to see your Gillott up and running. @7ven, @anidel

  • yes! definitely need to finish mine !!

  • Let me know as I would be interested in coming along.

  • For sure, I'm back now so keen. Sunday's are better for me.

  • Ok ok will grab frame and parts next week and start working on it in time for the ride.
Can't mid Sept or 3-13 Oct, so hopefully a weekend that works for all doesn't fall in those ranges!!

  • Sunday works for me, how about 21st October
last years Cambridge ride was on the 22nd October.

  • Rear derailleur cleaned

  • I'll see whether I am working.

  • Wonderful find, and I like how painstaking you are with this.

I'd recommend adding some lemon juice to accelerate the wire wool method - it served me pretty well for a year of restoring old racers. The smell of lemon juice and rust brings back great memories. But you may find you still prefer dry wire wool, each to his own.

  • Front wheel cleaned-
Wire wool on the spokes and then an oily rag.
Hub's were a light wire wool and oily rag.

  • Ta very much.
I like to try and document each part as I am learning as I go along :)

I will try out the Lemon tip.

  • Great bike! Are you planning on opening the hubs/BB? One of the questions is also how to prevent rusting after all that elbow grease. Obv oily rag on the rims is not a possibility.

  • Thanks, Front hub is a bit gritty but spins forever and will need some attention. Not touched the rear yet.

The BB could be sorted two ways.

Oil port is an option on the BB.
Not going to remove the chainset as it sounds a nightmare.

I am working on releasing the seat post bolt to see whether the seat post moves, it's a great fit for me anyway in its current position.

If I can extract the seat post, engine oil can then be poured down the seat tube (tip from Gillott expert) to lubricate the BB.
Saying that it rides very smoothly.

  • Thanks @Ndeipi for your top tip of Lemon juice with the wire wool, It's superb.

  • As said already lovely project and will watch with interest. Seeing the gradual and sympathetic resurrection is very satisfying.

  • Would you mind elbow greasing my parts too?? :)

    I mean bike parts obviously!!

  • Nice find Bob!

  • That’s reallly Nice.

  • Pedals have cleaned up rather well, the spindles were covered in a silver /grey paint which had been applied at some point in the last 60+ years -
