Not sure how it works to remove the cranks though...

Reading up on the history of Gillott it would appear that Ron Cooper would centre punch the bottom of the BB on the frames he built - this frame does have that centre punch mark.

That's excellent. The steel looks remarkably good under that paint. You see so many of these rusted out.
-
• #31
I'm told that the 1st owner took great care of it when it was being used.

Nice find what a lovely bike.
Cranks are Gnutti (Italian made )and have a splined bottom bracket axle.
Strip the bottom bracked down and treat it to new grease and grade 25 bearings.
Once the axle is pitted you will struggle to find a replacement.
Looking forward to seeing this cleaned up. -

Bit of gentle cleaning with some very fine wire wool on the front rim-
Dunlop Special Lightweight 27 x 1 1/4.Looking on the Classic lightweights site, these rims were the most common for the sporting cyclist -
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/wheels-avt.htmlRear wheel has the same rim.
Front is 32h with the rear being 40h which would appear to be the common set up for it's time.

Great find!

So what’s the plan for it? Full on restoration without looking back and regrets or sensible but thorough clean and regrease?
-
• #36
Clean & regrease for now.
Chainset has come up well with just a degreaser solution, rag and very fine wire wool.

Dayyum such a cool thing.

Great find.
That inner ring fascinates me. It's only like, what, one or two teeth smaller than the big ring?
-
• #39
So much for cage 3mm off the top ring! That chainset is beautiful.
-
• #40
Outer ring =49t.
Inner ring=46t -

Looks like tinfoil trick could clean it up some more. Try it out, start on the area that’s less visible as (very rarely) it may cause pitting on the chrome surface.
-
• #42
That chainset cleaned up well. Most Gnuttis I've seen come up for sale seem to be rusted to hell, so judging by the condition of this the rest of the bike should be in excellent fettle as well

What are you going to do with the heavily rusted bits? And are you replacing the consumables (cables, pads etc.?)
-
• #49
The worst areas hit with rust are -
Rear rim & spokes on both wheels =
Started with wire wool which is bringing the rims up a treat but is going to take some time. The rims & spokes beneath the rust are in very good order.Toe clips =Heavy rust & oil and after a lot of wire wool they are in decent shape and are made by firm called Ashby with Monique written on them.
Brake cable inners I will look to replace (if needed) and once I start using it, I may need to replace gear cables to get the gears functioning correctly.
Brake pads are Fibrax with loads of life in them but whether they are any good at stopping is another question.
Tubes & tyres =Both tubes hold air and tyres are really good but sidewalls are dry and a bit perished and will look to change them.
