Lovely. Sponging is so good on those flat surfaces.

Love the bases too

thank you both, it has been v fun using this method, and amazingly quick! ... too quick really, i didn't expect to be looking at buying another set so soon
excited to practice some more "display style" painting once these are done, im making a squad of reivers i will paint up in black using a standard brush as desk objects from left over sprues
but the sponging makes painting up 20+ models of various sizes and detail barable and i will likely keep doing this method for anything i hope to actually play a game with so if i want to expand it i won't feel "painters dread"

Just built a zombie army - still new to building/painting so going to spray a primer and give some time to think through the painting using contrast paints method.
One question - the minis are now attached to the bases, do people paint minis first or bases?
-
• #431
I do the mini first then base after, sometimes if I'm feeling smart I only attach the model by one foot so it's easy to snap off later to do the base. Depends a bit on what your basing plan is.
-
• #432
Model first, base after. For some models I will do them separately, and glue together at the end, esp if it's a "fancy base".
Plus of model then base is complete base with some colours from the model on there (in the case of overspill from painting, drybrush, whatever) doesn't make much sense, whereas the other way round kind of links the model into the environment.

One of the cool things about these kind of methods is you can always go back and add more. You could add more highlights / weathering / shadows to those models, but they're great as they are.
I find my enjoyment level for painting is somewhere above basic tabletop standard but somewhere below display level. Display level takes too long for results, pure tt standard feels results and not process driven so takes out some fun for me. All about finding that sweet spot.

This is the last thing I actually finished... Little one session job with "slapchop" and some manual highlights and freehand skull n crossbones. I don't mind the wonky pupils cause he's on the booze.

bases are a little treat for you to relax with at the end of the model
no more edges to worry about, no more shading, no remebering to pivo your elbow off your knee so you don't a shakey line
just slap the texture paint on, wash it with left over paints (every colour makes brown), little dry brush here, little dry brush there, got some on the model? that's grimdark baby! then a little bush to finish it all off
-
• #436
I'm the same. I don't have the patience to paint a single model for 5+ hours unless it's a really special one so I aim to do tabletop +. So many of my models get painted to a simple tabletop level for an event with the plan to finish them later which never happens.

oh this is excellent, wow!
yes i agree with you, display quality makes me want to gouge my eye out, why would i wet blend for four ours when i can do it with a midtone, wash and highlight.
i think when i can bare looking at these chaps again i want to go back and add some free hand insignias (much like your skull and bones), weathering and flair
maybe after i've actually played a game!

Thanks all! Bases last seems sensible way round and I’ve got some dead grass tufts, gravel and old catnip to create some textures and experiment with.

Thanks! And nice, that's a great idea.
Not sure where you're based but Hackney Area Tabletop Enthusiasts (HATE) at Bethnal Green Working Mens club is a super friendly club and really welcoming to new players. It was my main haunt for gaming when I lived in London.

My brother in law has the mad painting skills, won Golden Demon a few times. This one was a fave:
A few more of his bits are over here
I was always a shit painter, but my Tyranid army was undefeated back in the Year 9 40K league (me and 5 of my nerd friends) due to me apparently being the only person who understood tactics. Would quite fancy a game, but not sure I can stomach the cost of accumulating another army. Thanks be to my parents who gave away my entire collection to some kids down the road without consulting me whilst I was at uni.

damn that is some amazing stuff!
IF you did fancy giving gaming another go you could check out the combat patrol format from wh40k 10th ed. You just buy one box (around 75 pounds from discount web retailers) and have all the model you need to play some games.

Speaking of playing the game, I did a 3 round event last Sunday and won all my games coming 4th overall. I'm well chuffed with it, I usually come bang middle of the results

Love it! Some great reference back to the original rogue trader genestealer colour scheme :-)

Well done! That's great.
I'm just getting back into big army games again, going to build a new aos army and maybe try out some local events.
