They know the system and play it well - best placed three riders for every stage.
So they carefully avoid having anyone win the stage while breaking away on their own, or having burnt out domestiques, and focus on having a good number of mediocre riders coming in 20th.
As Ned cattily said the other day - what else are they here for?

They were disappointed on ITV4 when he didn't get in yesterday's breakaway.

He looks slightly ashamed to be wearing it.
Barguil in 2017 was a real lesson in how you win and keep the polka dot jersey. Cosnefroy is walking drunk down a dark alley with it lit up in front of his face and still no one has taken it.

not sure he’s managed to get over a cat 3 in the group for a week and yet.... still in the jersey

Watching Boardman wax lyrical full knowing that lockdown stopped me cycling and forced me to buy a car.
-
• #1157
Try watching that car thing instead?

• #1158
Pretty much sums it up

I know what I'd rather drive.

Sadly, that old fiat isn't exactly environmentally friendly. Probably not much better than the Grenadier depending on the engine size and fuel. Unos from the 80s could be not far off 180g/km of co2 brand new, never mind after 30-40 years of running.
In reality, if you need a "proper" off-roader for work or because you live somewhere remote etc, then maybe the Grenadier is a good car. If, as we all suspect, it's targeted at suburban school runs, it's madness.

That doesn't take into account the environmental impact of building a new car vs. keeping an old one in the road though. I'm pretty sure I read that the Grenadier's parts are built all over the place and then flown in to be assembled Portugal. The Panda's CO2 emissions would have to be monumental to offset that.

Now we have another tense wait to see if any teams will be excluded. No doubt everyone will be relieved to hear Prudhomme is back after testing negative.
-
• #1163
All negative apparently, race will presumably finish in paris

All negative apparently
Handy. Saves them having to 'wipe the slate clean' again I guess...

The Giro organisers have said they will forgo this rest day testing arrangement. Makes sense to me, seems a bit of a gimmick.

ll negative apparently, race will presumably finish in Paris
Great news!

• #1167
How does Paris work? Surely the Champs won't be empty?
-
• #1168
That's a Fiat Panda, you heathen.
MrsDeth had one when i first met her, 750cc of pure thrills.

• #1169
they came in 4x4, too! and would leave many a Defender/Grenadier-type car in deep mud because they weigh as much as Pozzovivo
-
• #1170
anyway, be sure to watch the first (half?) hour of the race today, it's going to be interesting
-
• #1171
Because..?
-
• #1172
all-out war to form a break and several big names (maybe even from Jumbo Visma) looking to upset things
-
• #1173
The first 30 km are being ridden in fancy dress.
-
• #1174
also interesting to see the green jersey battle. Will sagan try and get in the break? can they drop Bennett? I think answer will be no to both but be interesting to see them try
-
• #1175
seems a lot of riders want to be in today's break
consistency like this is why user Tijmen is saving LFGSS from third-tier tinpot posters
hat!
