  • It's probable the OfWat directed largesse of Affinity Water would not have run to such a 'consumable'.
Presumably they^ are constructed solely from sturgeon swim bladders?

  • Much obliged.
I've had a chat with Svendsons Sports the distributors for Scierra.
They sell through Harefield Tackle, (who have reduced Covid hours).
I'll find out tomorrow of they want my business.

  • How's it going, humans of the angle?

  • Haven't fished since the close of the river season but have been meaning to get onto the local lake as nothing hasn't graced my landing net this year 😔

  • I found a local lake which is club day ticket and not a "commercial". First two sessions had only bits on the pole, third session changed the approach and went specimen hunter with two rods on buzzers and afternoon/evening session and got a bream about 2.5lb, a perch about 3lb and a tench about 4.5lb. So nice to see the bait runners screaming off and not at all any less engaging than fishing the pole or match style. Can't wait for the river season to start again so I can go blank frustratingly on the fens whilst not catching tench.

  • Salmony. Although apparently it doesn’t count if you nab em on the way out back to sea.

Any fishy types here from Bristol? I’m moving up there shortly and wondering what’s about on my doorstep?

  • which is club day ticket and not a "commercial".

I always presumed they were the same. What's the difference between a day ticket and commercial water?

  • Ridiculous overstocking so that lazy bastards can catch a megaton of fish.

First from the river on a dry this season.

  • Ridiculous overstocking so that lazy bastards can catch a megaton of fish.

Either I've never been to a commercial or I lack any skill as an angler, I'm going with the latter. Nice haul by the way!

  • Both are chonky. Chalkstream? Or stocked or both?

  • Yep, chalkstream, the Darent, rainbow most definitely stocked, brownie less so. Water clarity ridiculous, the first time I could count the pebbles on the bottom of an 8' deep weirpool, every fish I caught could be seen taking the fly.

  • That's nice. I've laid off the fluff-chucking for a while as the local water has become an expensive syndicate, and I'm not paying £500 per year to stand around a hole in the ground with a load of other blokes who are catching stocked rainbows and then returning them. So it's Grafham or a long drive, neither of which particularly appeal at the moment.

@jambon There are lots of commercials around here, my definition being a fairly recently man-made hole with stocked fish (usually medium sized carp and some funny hybrid things they call F1s) they are run as businesses and tend to be quite sculpted and facility heavy. Incredibly popular with pleasure anglers new to the sport and matchmen who sometimes need 3 or 4 keepnets to weigh in. A large section of tackle is dedicated to this type of fishing and was developed as a consequence. In my day we didn't have pellet bands, pellet wagglers, carp floats, carp poles, method feeders etc.

Club waters and some day ticket lakes are the older gravel pits or natural (ish) ponds and lakes which have a head of mixed species occurring naturally with no or minimal stocking. They are run by clubs with the proceeds going towards upkeep and rent, not usually for profit. It's usual to struggle and blank on hard days! much like the rivers, but the payoff for a catch seems more satisfying IMO and the wildlife and peaceful surroundings are much nicer.

  • Thanks for explaining that, feel slightly better that I've mainly been fishing on club waters instead of 'commercials'. Having said that sure sure I could blank on a commercial given the chance!

I agree about some venues being nicer despite there being less chance of catching. I tend to spend most of my time on idyllic rivers, then periodically need reminding what a fish looks like so head over to the local commercial. Despite the bites being fewer and far between, those fish always mean more definitely.

  • First go at the tench this year, 3 so far, including this 5:1 male, so far so good!

  • Lovely Tinca, well in!

  • A special for @EB, knowing his passion for bream. They trundle around perfectly well on appropriate gear. Two 9s, 3x8s a 7 and a 6, not bad for an afternoon session.

  • Slime fest! Well done!

  • Missed this, that's very impressive.

After 8 months of watching ebay finally bagged some 9ft 1.75tc Nash Scopes for river duties. Even more excited for the season to start now, so expect a blank report on June 16th.

Out of interest does anyone have any experience of night fishing rivers? I don't hear many people doing it compared to carp fishing so wondered if it's 'a thing'.

  • I was watching those but didn't have the £
I did end up getting some 6ft 2lb scope snides for packing into a rucksack and doing some very lightweight stuff on the river once the season starts

  • I probably paid over the odds, but seems if you want any of the 1.75lb scopes you have to. I returned one a few months ago that arrived with a damaged cork handle, it was relisted this week and sold for £60 more than I paid. Crazy. 6ft 2lb seems like a good alternative.

  • What reels are you putting on them?

  • I have one Daiwa Whisker SS1600 and will buy another for the 2nd rod.

  • Cool. Have you tried them yet?
I decided eventually to bang a pair of 4000 bait runners on the scopes, which seems perfect with 8lb line. The rods are quite funny, very slim and short handles, like a lure rod, which means the fishable length is only 4ft shorter than my 11ft Drennans.
Quite poker-ish for 2lb tc. But will probably feel different with 20z+ of feeder on the end - I just hope they have enough give not to bump off any Tench I do catch.
At least the short length means I won't keep having to negotiate the overhanging branches every single cast.
