  • ^That happens approx every 40Km.

I’ll buy the 54t ratchet because a) it’s way cheaper than replacing the hub, and b) Customer service aside, and this particular fuck-up also to one side, the quality of the kit seems good.

But honestly, I’m putting DT Swiss below YT but above DMR in the “shittest customer service in the bike industry” rankings.

  • what is happening? I have the same hub ..

  • A certain batch of them weren't made correctly so the surface wears, which then gums them up, which makes the ratchet stick inside the free hub body (bottom photo) so you have to pull the cassette off and then lever the ratchet out, then put it all back together again.

I asked DT Swiss (who are going to replace the ratchet as part of a recall) whether I could pay the difference between the 36t and the 54t, and their response was "LOL, no, pay full price for the upgrade so you think we're cunts".

  • If the dt hub is on the reserve wheels, just crack a rim and SC will send a complete replacement wheel...

  • Nope, on the wheels I built for the Scalpel originally - Light Bicycle rims.

  • I have the 36t and wanted the 54t but I've read that the 54t wears out faster due to the smaller splines/teeth.

Are the above pictures the replacement 36t doing the same thing?

  • No, we have so far failed to install the replacement 36t as DT Swiss are unable to provide the special tool required for EXP hubs to swap the ratchets.

  • 295 is going back to Pace for them to have a look at some (I'm assuming) stone damage:

  • Wow you really don't have much luck.

Resin and some sheets of carbon for the lower toolbox?

  • stone damage

Don't volunteer that information to them. Don't give them any ammunition to refuse a free warranty replacement.

Don't forget to bring a large oven. The resin and carbon fibre will be useless without.

  • I hear gravel biking is fun

  • I don't believe it though

  • Nah, air curing resins are fine for a repair

Depends what resin system you use. Most wet layup epoxy resins will cure at room temperature. It's generally only prepreg which requires an oven. I used to have a home-made prepreg oven made from MDF, insulation foam, an electric hob heating element and the rad fan from a Honda Fireblade.

  • Well, fingers crossed I don’t need to make one in my garage.

  • I found it highly satisfying. If rather smelly.

    Ha! Outstanding.

I of course have no idea what I'm talking about re carbon fibre.

When leggy blonde mentioned the resin and fibre I remebered an image I'd seen. It was an interview with Danny MacAskil. He'd damaged a prototype carbon trials frame. Someone from Santa Cruz repaired it in a domestic kitchen using the oven and some tin foil!

  • Compared to that my pre-preg oven was F1 spec! At least I had a vacuum pump to consolidate the carbon plies...
