  • Should hopefully receive this within the next week.

It's a nigel dean tour master. I have been searching for a steel cross/gravel frame for a short while, fancied something more modern but this has won me over.
The gentlemen at Argos Racing Cycles, Bristol, replaced the two creased tubes and carried out various modifications at my request. The drop outs and frame ends were chrome plated. The gear and rear brake cables were re-routed along the top of the top tube. Mudguard bosses were fitted to the underside of the fork crown, seat stay and rear of the chain stay bridges. A pump peg was fitted to the non-drive side seat stay, and the frame and forks were stove enamelled in Eau de Nil....all in all it worked out at over £600 - but it seemed worth it at the time to get it back on the road again.
    The plan is :
-Modern 9/10 speed group, Rear Spacing still to be confirmed.
-1x or double chainset in silver.
    -Possibly some ditto bull moose.
-Silver rimmed wheel set with 35c tyres, not using guards (need suggestions)
    -Silver post/flite combo.
-Front rack (no idea on what style or fixing)
-I am not the biggest fan of the paint. There's a few rough spots so I may get this powder coated by a family friend. But that'll be confirmed later on. Like the idea of singe colour but with different coloured seat tube.

This will be a slow burner. And on a slight budget as I am saving for a holiday in the summer after exams.
edit: for now building this bike

  • I bet the color will grow on you.
    Looks lovely from here.
    650 or 700 wheels?

  • 700, clearance for 36c according to seller. And the colour will remain the same for a while yet so it will probably grow on me

  • also need suggestions for brakes. hanger for cantis on rear, so leaning towards them. However, mini v seem like the simpler more cost efficient option

  • Although I'm a big fan of cantis, I would say go for mini-V, if the clearance is enough.

  • double post

  • Would be a shame to powdercoat this imo.

Sram NX matched to a classic chainset (Sugino xd2 with a single ring) would be nice.

  • Classic chain set will definitely happen . Need to decide between road and mtb derailleur. Ideally I’d like a silver one for the classic look

  • The Carlton Clubman came in eau de nil and it looks nice when built op :)

  • Although I'm a big fan of cantis

    Weirdo.

  • I was very close to bidding on this so looking forward to See it coming together.
    Good luck

  • I recently replaced the cantilever brakes on my Trek 520 with a pair of Shimano BR-R353 mini-v brakes, and they have been really good so far in combination with tiagra 4700 STIs. I find them more powerful than Tektros rx5 and they offer good modulation too imo, and of course very easy to set up compared to cantis.

  • To get this running I’ll probably use my silver aksiums then when I can afford it, buy a more classic wheelset 32h 3xlaced kind of thing

  • dedintiely thinking of silver polish mini vs if I can find them . Can see that tektro rx6 Coke in silver

  • I have these. They are 'Sora' level, but apart from the integrated pads/shoes they're really well made and powerful.

  • just an fyi, but if the canti mounts are the 'old' narrower width, modern mini vs, and most modern cantis won't fit. Shimano CX50 / CX70 will fit if you remove the large spacer, or you'll have to go old school

  • okay thanks! How can I measure without any brakes?

  • Measure the distance between canti bosses on your frame and compare measurements with mine or others here or on the internet ;)

  • New is about 82mm centre to centre and old is about 68mm centre to centre

  • thanks will measure up1

  • frame was shipped yesterday, arrived today! clearances look good. Am already in love with the paint. Quick mock up with parts from other bikes. Like the grey rims though.

  • excuse the awful photographing skills

  • For now I am definitely leaning towards bull moose bars or risers. I'd like to put drop bars on but the main aim of this bike is comfort as i already have a back breaking road bike.
