  • Well, dropouts are thicker than tubes as it turns out. Had to use a wider/hotter flame and it kept pushing the little eyelet around. The whole thing would look good and I'd think 'just a little more silver to even it out' and then suddenly everything would fall apart and I had to start over. Arrgh! Anyway, third attempt held up and looks like this after a quick once over with wire brush.

  • Some sanding paper later, test fitting guard stay. Probably going to work!

  • Very cool. Looks like it was meant to be like that.

  • Other side. This time the little fucker should stay in place.

  • Awesome tinkering.

What kind of torch are you using?

  • Orwellian

  • You live near me, can I come join in your tinkering? I'll bring Belgian beers.

  • Excellent jigging!

  • Ha!

  • The hammer/threaded rod bodge is genius!

  • What kind of torch are you using?

  • Thanks for the kind words. @Thrust I do this in between family/work stuff so hard to plan ahead really. But I'll let you know if the stars align at some point...

  • Haha, yeah, same here really. No worries, I'll just take a stab at it myself. I just need to hack out a jig for brazing on dt shifter bosses. Any ideas?

Did you buy the Rimac Torch on Jula or somewhere else?

Would this work just as well? https://www.jula.se/catalog/verktyg-och-maskiner/svets-och-lod/lod/gasdrivna-lodverktyg/mixgasbrannare-218540/?f.category.code=A-040000&sort.by=novelty&sort.order=desc&skip=50&take=25&page=3&_=1520943234184#tab04

I will do this outside, so no worries of smell and poisonous gas building up.

  • answering my own question above:

This doesn't look too hard to hack together to keep them square.

  • Yes, got it at jula. The one in your link wont work, doesn't get hot enough.

  • Nice work with mudguard eyelets.

  • 1900ºC is not enough? Melting point is 618 to 899ºC for silver isn't it?

  • Rimac torch looks nice, seems quite pricy in the UK though :(

  • Oh, okay. Well it's around £100 here, which seems to be mostly for the burner & tip. After that it's £25 per bottle so not too bad unless you're going to do lots of stuff.

  • Fork time. Dremeled out a small recess. Same fixture bodge.

  • 1900ºC is not enough?

Ummm, idk about any of this really. Best to ask a framebuilder I guess, or better yet try it and report back!

  • You're right. I've tried the one in the link for melting silver and while it got hot enough to melt the silver it was hard to get the steel hot enough. The silver wanted to bead on the steel instead of joining it.

  • Ok, that’s actually similar price to here then but here I can get a Monument torch for like £35.

Cheapest I’ve found gas is £11 a bottle from Screwfix which is like a trade counter shop but they also serve the public. Way cheaper than in the diy superstores where it’s about £25 a bottle.

  • Cheers for that. I guess I will buy the one Russ is using and go to work.
