  • Fortitudes are great.

I'll have some SLX cranks going spare soon if you need?

  • Picked the frame up today after a bit of a cross country trek. Photos to follow when I'm back.

Excited to get it built up now. It already has the ss chain still with it, so will get a PX conversion kit in to get the current wheelset in. Am seriously considering going Alfine long term though. Found this which seems very reasonable:https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-custom-made-rw-28-alfine-sg-s7000-8-speed-with-dt-swiss-466d-disc-511535

Also inspired by Cas 'basketpacking' setup. Apparently that's a thing. Running an igh with basket seems ultimate utility bike, but I'll need the mudguards for the Welsh weather! http://www.whileoutriding.com/bike-talk/california-bound

Depending on budget also want to get these tyres in, got the silly wide guards to make sure I can squeeze them in. https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYSCGS1RGF/schwalbe-g-one-speed-raceguard-folding-tyre

  • Cheers, I think I'm going to try and keep it 110bcd and 5 bolt to allow for parts swapping with other bikes. Already have a couple of NW chainrings I can chuck on for starters.

  • Realised what I've pretty much based the build on, Flat bar Standard Rando I saw ages ago:

Aiming for this, with a bit more tyre.

  • Its taken an age, but I've finally managed to put some time into building this up.

It still needs a fair bit of fettling work, also shim for bars, 29x2.3 tyres on order too. I had originally planned to just repurpose my 40mm Nanos, but they look comedy with the mudguards I ordered getting a good front tyre/mudguard/rack fit is going to be the big headache I think. The rack from @togas is great, potentially will cut the stays down - though that will limit ability to swap bikes!

Also discovered that my plan to reuse current 40t chainring fouls the chainstay, so will need to rethink that. Either smaller ring, or potentially push the driveside BB out with spacers (Don't know what this does to the internal tube though).

  • Terrible photo but some progress made this evening.

2.35 G ones arrived, they come up pretty small on road disc rims, so at 53mm approx, which is fine by me. Fill out mush much better that the 40mm Nanos.

Got a donated deore crankset from a friend, it's a triple but will suit the single speed purpose well until I know what gearing I want. Just running it on the middle ring with the outside ring as bash guard. Fortunately the chain already fitting fits perfectly over it and the SS kit from @GreatSince78.

Badly need to sort rack angle out. Always hard to judge when it's in the stand.

Other than that, still only have one brake fitted, need bolts etc for other IS to PM adapter. Also missing the preload thing in the crankset, so need to get that in. Brooks B17 saddle and carradice already set aside to add later.

  • Really liking the build so far. Look forward to seeing it complete.

  • 99% There - rear brake caliper not fully fixed and hose needs fitting properly, mudguard stays need trimming one I'm happy the guards and the rack are all aligned properly. Had a quick spin on it in the snow, seemed appropriate as a first voyage. Got sideways a lot, much pleased.

  • Caliper and Hose now in place. Dynamo Lighting system is getting there too, bodged a mount for the light designed for a handlebar mount to fit the rack mounting system, hanging it just underneath. Looks neat and should give a good beam too.

  • How come double chainrings and single-speed rear?

  • Just what I had available, outer ring is redundant aside from acting as bashguard/chain catcher and the fact that the chainring bolts are too long to just run a single ring on them.

Plan to get a a narrow wide ring soon, but want to commute for a bit on it to get a feel for what gearing I want.

  • Great build! Only minor downside to the light bracket is it might get covered in wheel spray, but easy fixed with a quick finger wipe

  • Latest Dad-bike incarnation. The opposite weather to the snow shots above. Super functional for the nursery run.
