  • Was talking bout these, not the horrid ones in the op's picture..

  • I take your point about the colours. Regarding tubeless I know i should consider it by I don't find tyres and tubes that fussy

  • Small update.
Following @Rodolfo 's disparaging remarks about the Michelins I had a re-think and bought a couple of these...

  • I like the vintage look and I thought they'd look the part on the Suntours. The tyres themselves have a real period waxiness to them and took a little bit of determination to put on the rims. The sidewalls look great inflated although i'm not sure you can tell from the picture under artificial light.

  • Are you going to have brakes installed on the bike?

  • Yes, it's the law here that if you want to ride a fixed gear bike on the road you must have at least a front brake. That is why I swapped the front fork out for a drilled one.
I bought a Shimano AX600 brake like the one in the picture but when placed it in the fork and raised it as far as the slot would allow it still looked low on the braking surface.
I may have to re-think this. Caliper suggestions anyone?

  • Thrust me, it was only to save you from mistakes.. and they do look the part!

  • I think Dura Ace 7700 or 7800 are really great looking brakes. Also (supposedly) will stop you really well.

  • Agreed. Good call dude.

  • Good shout Pawlus. I've started looking already. I do have a 105 front brake but i'd sooner have a DA one.

  • I concur with @Pawlus and DA 7700 & 7800 have very good stopping power.
You should also consider DA 7400 which are also good.

  • I have one of these Paul levers in silver £12 if required

  • Thanks LittleK I may take you up on that.

  • No worries although I hadn't realised the updated pages when I replied...

  • Again time has slipped by but i've been determined to finish this project before the new year, which I achieved yesterday.
Some last minute minor hiccups. The shimano AX brake wouldn't sit right on the braking surface of the rim so I put it to one side in favour of a 105 caliper.
Many thanks to everyone on LFGSS who has contributed to this project by way of trades or encouragement and advice...

  • Looking fantastic!

Is there a velodrome on the island at all, or are you destined to ride this only on the road?

  • This looks great!! So practical and fun!

  • No but i go to Bordeaux a few times a year and I might even be moving to Derby in the next couple of years or so because it has a velodrome. In the meantime it will spend time being run around Douglas Quay and Prom.

  • Cheers...I hope it's both but fully expect neither!

  • I still want this.
