1967...late in terms of Tester years
So it existed before I got Lego. We must have had some in the early 70s.

All this brick chat is reminding me of an annoyance.
Our next door neighbours offered us a load of free Lego as their grown up / teenage kids had left it behind. A bin bag full! Of course we readily agreed.
But, the vast bulk of it is star wars kit stuff that is just all weird shaped bricks and surfaces and antennae and whatnot.
Now that this lot is mixed in with our original, more basic, blocks it is really hard to find bits to just build castles and towers with.
I think I am going to have to have a massive sort out. The prospect is daunting.

The prospect is daunting.
It is, but also immensely satisfying. We have a vague system of Ikea boxes for our Lego:
- Small interesting bits (anything less than 4 studs long or 2x2 like
lights, antenna, hinges, small Technic bits, etc) - This box is excellent for building micro-scale spaceships :) - Medium interesting bits (windows, turntables, wheel arches, etc)
- Large interesting bits (canopies, chassis, etc)
- Wheels (and axles)
- Round things
- Angled things
- Blocks
- Flat plates
- Minifigs + accessories
It sort of works.

The advantage of allowing small hands to rifle through a large unsorted pile of Lego is that their plastic minds don't have fixed ideas of what a funny shaped brick is supposed to be for, so it can be anything.

Yes, you need to sort. However, the kids will jumble it all back in together in no time unless you take the 'new' stuff away, which might cause other problems.
Star Wars isn't actually even the worst for that balkanisation of parts. Things like Ninjago or that horrible new series Monkie Kid are worse.
In most new-ish LEGO series, they use about six or seven simple strategies to reduce the value (for a casual user, not for headbangers who build hugely complex things and sell stuff they don't want via BrickLink) of what you buy without making it too apparent.

Next you're going to imply that mashton's orange.

Now I have eight of these balloon tyres, I should probably be MOCing up a BTR-80. Plenty have been done at smaller scale

It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard.”

Custom minifigs, but more importantly the mats would be pretty sweet on your Lego building surface

Silly me, I've only just remembered Brick Owl, which has the years of when bricks were introduced, so could perhaps serve as a source for a brick timeline. I mostly look at BrickSet as I prefer the layout there.

Clearly very late in terms of Tester years. :)
