Apropos of nothing a house round here (Lev) listed for £240k apparently just sold for over 300k after a bidding war broke out. Something to do with schools being strict about catchment areas. Very strange.

All this r£d h0t house price chat gave me cause to look up what flats in our blocks are going for. About the same as when we bought ours four years ago, it seems. Thanks, the 52%!

I grew up in marple, loved it. Great cycling access.

My 3 bed terrace in Levy was 142k 2 years ago, which was over asking. Houses on my street are about 160k now.

We've been looking at rental places this week and settled on Whaley Bridge in the Peaks. Marple is nice and has the benefit of being on the line between Manchester and Sheffield so it doubles your work options.
But we were put off Marple by the shite traffic.
Pleased we're renting while we sell London property(s). Gives us a chance to decide what/where we like and why.

Well this just got a bit more urgent. My wife's accepted a job in (well, near) Bury. Will move in with the in-laws until we find somewhere, but for a few days I had decided I was definitely up for starting a new and sexy life in Ramsbottom.

Oh and any jobs going? Ideally part time? I can speak French and German and drive a bike.

P town aka Prestwich? North side, awesome for cycling, Hebden loop is awesome

Nice, Rammy isn't that bad at all and has a pretty decent centre. Grind and Tamp is a nice joint to grab a coffee, and the Rake is one of my love-hate climbs (25%!). Nice to ride bikes round there, lemme know if you manage to find time and we'll go for a dash when you move up.

Cheers. It looks like a really nice part of the world around there. I know Bury a tiny bit from going to Gigg Lane for FC United over the years, but to be honest when my wife said "a lot of people at my new place say Ramsottom's nice," I was like "I'm not living in Bury."

But anyway, the slight difficulty is that one of the reasons for this move is to be nearer our parents for our son, but they live in south Cheshire. So us living in north Manchester is fine, but it just removes that option of them popping up to watch him for an hour before/after nursery. It turns a 30 minute drive into an hour's drive at least, so that's one to think about...

I used to work in Bury travelling from S.Manc. Only decent reliable travel option at peak times was to ride. To get tram it would be best to live at the end of line so either Alty or E.Dids to get them empty. Driving = forget it.
Ramsbottom has a Steam Train to Bury. Win.

Interesting, thanks. My wife and my dad got from the interview to Stockport station in about 30 minutes on Thursday, apparently (18:00-18:30).
It's not actually bang in Bury itself, just south off the M66 a bit (can anyone guess where yet?) - so not bang close to a tram stop. BANG.
My mind's kind of going back to Marple a bit now.
The other thing about living in Rammy is that if this Bury job doesn't work out, we're stuck up in Lancashire with out families an hour away...

Yep on the days its clear that's reasonable, its the times it snarls up that'd frustrate. Being nearer to folks is defo your better plan still imo.

• #42
If the plan was to be closer to parents, living on the other side, in a part you don't really want to be in, with bad transport links is not the greatest way to start out a new life back home.

PM me?

• #44
Yeah, but I've actually come round to the idea of living there in itself. But you're right on the other points...

Plus. Everyone knows Salford is where it's at.

Lynn - I'm not living in Salford.

You say that.
You'll be get back, pop out for a pint, find yourself raving in cheetham hill, next thing you know you'll be contemplating moving closer to the action. -

An unlikely current front runner! We're going to try and rent for a year or two so we get a sense of what's what.

I'm based in Prestwich currently again (lived here most of my life), so let me know if you have any questions!

We're gonna rent for a year we think while we find our feet rather than rush into buying somewhere...
Someone's told us the Whitefield end is nicer than the other (?) end of Prestwich. Any parts to avoid altogether?
Our 3 bed terrace, small garden, sold in Old Trafford/Whalley Range (M16) for £240k. It's about 10min walk down to Chorlton, so a good periphery area.
In Chorlton, you'd have to add about 100k+ to that. For example, this is probably similar size to what we sold, but with a slightly bigger garden and it's slap bang in middle of Chorlton http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-70102778.html
Most desireable area of Chorlton is Beech Rd. And Chorlton Green. Maybe 350k upwards could get you something nice.
In Didsbury, probably looking at £400k upwards. There's Didsbury Village and West Didsbury. Both nice, with bars & restaurants. Both similarly priced. Maybe West Dids a bit more.
e.g - West Dids 4 four bed, not slap bang in West Dids, but it's a 5min walk http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-52267185.html
e.g - Dids village 3 bed, http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-62880508.html
I'd go these areas depend on budget, for 3 or 4 beds:
Old Trafford - 180k to 250k
Whalley Range - 200k to 300k (bit of crossover in these two areas)
Heaton Moor - 325k to 400k
Chorlton & Didsbury - 350k anywhere up to a million hahah, a million pounds (more beds)
I'm not up to speed on other places, but yeah Levenshulme, Cheadle, Altrincham worth a look. Sale and Stretford border Old Trafford, so some cross over there again. Withington and Fallowfield are primarily student areas. But Withington borders Didsbury, and it's possible to find similar size houses for a bit less dosh.
