  • I'm off to Porto for a long weekend and I'm after some suggestions.

Places to eat, visit, walk, see etc.

    Obrigado!

  • Went a long time ago but remember it as a beautiful city.
We did the Port tasting tour at Crofts on the riverfront - was good fun

think there are quite a few to choose from

  • Thanks for this.
Yeah, there does seem to be a lot of these wine/river tours. I'll check this one out :)

  • 10euros is a done deal!

  • Might just do a weekend of wine tours.

  • I’m off to Porto next weekend too, with a spare Monday to go riding. Anyone know somewhere to rent a road bike, or have any suggestions for roads or climbs to ride?

  • Porto's a great city but it's an exhausting city to wander around. Everywhere seems to uphill from everywhere else. It's like being in a MC Escher painting.

  • Ha, amazing. We've rented an apartment which came with two bikes. Hopefully this will help getting around.

  • I did a google search before and there seemed to be a few places to hire bikes. Didn't seem too expensive either but they are just town bikes mostly.

  • Yep, mostly cruisers and mountain bikes. Might have found a couple of options though.

  • Please do let me know what you find when you're out there.
So far we're going to Casa Da Musica and probably do a lot of wine tasting.

  • I spent a couple of days there this summer, in-between Lisbon and the Douro valley. Being vegetarian I went for dinner at Lupin, which did not disappoint. All the restaurants by the river serve the same stuff (cod, francesinha etc...).
The other side of the bridge (South) we found the best place for wine and petiscos, but I can't remember the name for the life of me. Off av. de Diogo Leite, so probably rua Cândido dos Reis, on the eastern side of the street.
Worth nothing that Ubers are plentiful and crazy cheap.

  • Bring an extra suitcase to bring back wine / port (I did).

  • The GF and I are vegetarian, so this is perfect. Thank you.

Bring an extra suitcase to bring back wine / port (I did).

We're flying without luggage but I will definitely bring a few bottles back in my hand luggage.

  • Gonna have to be miniatures den.

  • I'll just throw all my belongings in the bin at the airport and only return with wine.

  • Used to go to Porto regularly - great little city. You can easily spend a weekend doing tours of port houses - there are loads if you're prepared to walk a few hundred yards up the hill from the river on the Vila Nova de Gaia side - you'll get a bit of history and a sample in each. Don't just do Sandeman and Calem ..

I'm told there are some really good galleries and museums too. Never made it that far :-)

  • Nice one.
Currently got Croft Port recommended on that side.

  • Croft is a nice little house - was a good tour and a nice room to tuck into samples. Offley nearby used to be great but I'm not sure they do tours there anymore. Once sat and polished off a nice vintage in their tasting room with friends. Grahams is popular too. Further afield Real Companhia Velha was a really good tour but a short cab ride away. You may find that some places are closed given the time of year.

Mmmmm - I can smell the barrels just thinking about it.

  • Excellent little list. We're actually going end of November, so even later.

  • So far,

    Lupin restaurant.
Croft Port, Offley etc for wine/port.
Casa da Musica for some classical music.
    Botanical gardens.
Serralves contemporary art museum and gardens.

  • @dbr has a point, you can't fly with liquids, unless you bought them in the aiport after security. The shop there is OK, but obviously less choice / more expensive than buying in town.

  • Was gonna leave it in the hope of a story about slamming four bottles of port pre-security at the airport and getting arrested after touch down in Gatwick having been sick on the pilot.

  • Very true. I clearly hadn't thought that one through.

  • When we got off our flight from Porto this summer there was a bloke at the carousel gingerly opening a case that was leaking liberally over the floor. Messy. Smelled wonderful though..

Reminds me - must get a colheita (or 2) in for Christmas.
