  • Also, the security in Milan thought the wheels of webbing and velcro were cheese....

  • Scored these awesome mini bulldog clips in Saino's before flying back to Italy. Be warned, sewing machines go ping and snap if a superfluous bit of metal happens to be in the path of the stitch, like the wire arm in the unfolded position....

Will update tomorrow with the latest test bags.

  • Done very little the last couple days. Routine has changed as the gf is working til late.

Found myself waking up just before lunch and staying up til her return. As a result I can say that Futureworld is way too slow, Gone Girl is way too long but really dark, Blade of the Immortal is awesome, Sicario is also slow, and probably I'll get through every episode of Stranger Things before I have any more interesting results to add to this project.

    Lazy stitching on test bags.

  • Also, as a result of losing daylight in that window, a DIY'd solution to aid the wobbly stitch lines after the last bags. Been struggling to see what I'm doing without any kind of lamp.

  • DIY'd a 22mm watch strap real quick, for a watch back in the UK... once I know if it fits/looks okay then I can make something more polished. Also, finally sewn the giant ass cross bag, and the tool pouches for the guys who gifted me the tarp.

    Oh, and cats.

  • Watch straps looks really cool.
I might have a go at making one for my timex with a nato-style strap. It should be even easier to make.

    Kittehs look cute too.

  • Soooooooo... today was the last day, leaving for the UK on the 9th. It is too expensive and hassle to get the machines to the UK so they must stay here for the time being.

Almost everything has been packed, stacked, and covered over with tarp to keep clean and dust/dirt free until I might return. Very sad.

Forgot to take photos of some of the stuff I made this past week. New chapter in the UK, in time...

  • Small update. Back in the UK, and after a month of misery, I bought one of the Chinese leather patchers. It really isn't a scratch on the machines packed up and stored, but at least it's something to fight with until I have a workshop setup again.

Forgot to post photos before, but how sad it was to pack this stuff up like so:

  • So it's now a month and a half since leaving the workshop, and my bedroom floor back in the UK is a big mess, with the Chinese leather patcher in a corner between the desk and some other stuff. We just got back from a week in Milan, where the gf was working at Lineapelle translating for a man that runs a few big factories in the South of China. She managed to get me a pile of samples that he was otherwise throwing away, so a very heavy carry-on bag, and I have some material to play with - both leather and synthetic.

Also popped to one of the shops in Chinatown and picked up a half dozen coloured threads for the machine. 80 cents per roll of 800m of coloured thread - cheaper than buying online anywhere.

Hope to have something to show in the near future. Must pop to @danb for the rest of the material too, and buy a bunch more side release buckles online.

  • Gf has been sporting the green&yellow I made her; definitely limp-snow proof. Scored a massive pile of leather scraps yesterday so made a couple prototype watch pouches, and a mini mp3 player roll.

Got a deal on loads of (vintage) zips from the charity shop, sorted them into piles of similar sizing.

Someone on ebay had some asset-clearance bits so there'll be a few dozen side release clips and a small roll of webbing to arrive in the next few days.

By the time I have everything to make a cross/waist bag maybe the weather warms up enough to test on the bike.

  • (Edited above post, too many pictures). Still no sign of webbing and buckles so been playing with more leather...

  • More tests with leather, a couple rolls and a wallet with zip coin purse and a card slot either side of the other piece with a suede divider.

  • Stitching was wobbly on the black test, made another in blue with smoother stitching.

Surprised I can make a thing on this machine, really is bare bones and painful compared to the Singers.

  • Looks good!
Does your machine have a walking foot? I have a regular sewing machine and it keeps wanting to shift the layers of fabric about when I use heavier fabrics.

  • Yea this thing is a horribly basic walking foot shoe repair machine. Costs £130 delivered (by Yodel, from a UK evilbay seller), material does want to slip a little when it's suede underneath.

Layers are happy to move together with a piece of paper between the material and the machine, and it tears off fine. You could try that under your presser foot on top of the material if it's the top layer that's shifting.

  • That sounds like a good trick. I'll give it a go!

  • Was thinking about your issue whilst searching for a bigger machine for myself.

A real alternative to using paper between the presser foot and top layer is either find the presser foot with little rollers built in, or else you buy a presser wheel.

The post bed Singer in Italy has the wheel and it's great, takes a bit of a learning curve though, as material sits different. Material may still drift but much less than with a regular foot.

I may be purchasing a heavy duty 'industrial' tailoring/alterations machine for medium to heavy fabrics to fire through some proper sized bags. If I do I'll almost certainly buy one of the wheels like this listing. I'm out of luck finding a good motorised compound feed/needle feed/walking foot (that is also cheap and local), and experience with the wheel before was positive.

  • Good shout! I have been looking at something like that, so it's nice to hear some feedback from someone who has experience.

  • The wheel worked fine for me, but the roller foot was suggested elsewhere on the web with mixed opinions. Your mileage will certainly vary, but considering the cost it may be worth the punt. Some more proficient members may suggest otherwise.

  • Only just encountered this thread. Very inspiring. I love the yellow and green roll top you made for your gf.

  • I'd be nice to find something used, but our Bernina sewing machine was bought brand new last autumn and I can't seem to find any used feet locally.
I'll try to convince my GF that we should get a rolling foot :)
