I am considering crank lengths and construction of cranks.
I can either construct a BMX style chainset using a bit of chainstay and the axle from a Tiagra chainset or shorten a pair of noname Arkose cranks.
I think hand made cranks will be fun and probably lighter and could allow me to use some 94bcd four arm chainrings I would otherwise never have the need for.
I could also use discarded MTB triple chainrings made of steel and braze them straight onto the chainset.Either way I have pedal thread taps waiting for my at collection point.

I have notifications set for Early riders on most local 2nd hand marketplaces, but nothing came up as of yet. Definitly interested in a batch model is you ever get it setup. Maybe not for the eldest, but there are 2 more who will also need bikes in time. :)
As for drivetrain, it would be nice to keep to standard or nomalised industrial parts. Forces on the parts would be low I guess so you would have a bit more freedom in design.
Some kind of modularity would be nice to have though, interchangeable chain rings considering wear. And the option to use 2 chainrings, where the outer would be a bash guard/protector.

I don’t think a kids chainring is ever going to wear out

Either way I have the luxury of just doing it all over again if I end up doing something stupid.

If you have 3 kids or want to pass down the bike I reckon it would be interesting if it would.

jsus crist, i want you to build the crank yourself!! and the seatpost is it titanium firefly one?? (seriously, amazing stuff!)

The seat post in the render you mean? That's a quick sketch of the Zoom steel seat post she is currently rocking. I am undecided on components, but I have a stuck black Thomson Elite i might need to excavate from a frame soon and as that will end up pretty short it might be what she ends up getting.
I m likely using the stem from this and maybe the seat.

ye the seatpost comment was more like taking the piss (not sure if i am applying it correctly) and also envious of the level the balance bike is getting at! :)

I am thinking I wanna keep it simple, maybe spice things up with coloured lace-up:

I have been thinking about it actually, but the think I just want flat and simple earthy

Fair enough. A slightly dark terracotta would fit the bill but that may be a bit hard to source fabric wise!

I was thinking about a darker burned orange, but I don't think that's an option and coyote fits the colour scheme.

Good shout @Lolo ! Safety orange is the new black, it really goes with anything.
In the burnt orange corner there's EcoPak's brick red, but it's not quite the same. Two pics from different suppliers, on my screen the right one is closer to the actual fabric. I need to hurry up and become big enough to order fabrics by the thousands of yards already, then I could do any bloody colour I want.
