It's the mix of gloss and matte that looks odd imo.
For what it's worth the cotton tape on my CdF is fine with no extra tape to hold it on -

Got some tyres for the cargo project in the post. Maxxis Refuse 27.5 x 2.0" and Grifter 20 x 2.4".
Just waiting for rims, spokes and front hub.
