• Does anyone want to buy my boat? 57' widebeam now on a mooring at Northolt. I've only ever CC'd but this is a really nice mooring.

Brand new kitchen and bathroom, king sized bed, plenty of room (we had an omnium, multiple other bikes, a drumkit, 2 sofas etc, trust me it's plenty spacious):

Not sure this kind of post is allowed outside classifieds (?) but I'll mitigate my flagrant flogging with any advice anyone needs on buying, mooring, moving or refurbishing both narrowboats and widebeams (both of which I've lived on for 3+ years) in London.

  • Have PM'd you.

  • Interested in dogs if you'll split?

  • Mooring detail says no dogs allowed, so I guess they were just visiting...

  • It's an old picture, to illustrate what it looked like when we lived on it. As I mentioned, I never had a mooring myself! (I wish - would have loved to live at Northolt)

@kl ha! Unwilling to split - the big fawn lurcher makes living with the smaller saluki just about bearable. She grew up on the boat so was perfectly at home with engines, horns, towpath life - not doing terribly well now we're living on land, to be honest!

  • Enjoying the Macclesfield canal as part of the Cheshire ring. Been interesting so far, scorching hot, first load of locks to tackle, the weedhatch has been cleared on an almost daily basis, barely slept through a terrific thunderstorm & had to mop out the engine room after all the rain. But I'm loving it.
@ioreka that is a beautiful boat! I'd have no idea what to do with all that space, not that a widebeam is much use round here. Hope it goes to a good home.

  • Someone should start LNBWB.com. :)

  • terrific thunderstorm

Always imagined that in a Narrowboat this would be terrific fun - you are so close to the chaos outside but quite well protected.

had to mop out the engine room after all the rain.

    Hah yeah, quite well protected.

  • Boom! Haven’t been on here for a while...! Not much seems to have changed😂
I’ve now been living on Captain Spaulding since September (I think?) and have almost got it how I want it...

  • nice! did you have to scale down the bike collection?

  • I'm going to have to reluctantly sell Disco Betty. Moved in with my partner at start of lockdown and the house isn't quite big enough for both of us working from home and Smallboy and dog, so we're going to have to move somewhere with more room. Gutted to have to sell, but upkeep on a big boat a mile away that we've not been able to visit for a year is not a justifiable ongoing expense.

I'll post pics here when she's going on the market - 70 foot widebeam with a Limehouse Marina mooring.

  • Just a lot!!😂

  • I'm very interested in this. Feel free to pm details....

  • TIL what 'grinders' are in a yachting sense and that in 2017 NZ won the America's Cup with a bunch of bikes (cyclors) instead of hand grinding...

  • I'd gladly have either. No money for the foreseeable future though :)

  • I'm giving this thread a bump as my partner and me have been offered a boat to live on for a few months while we're back in the UK.
We've both lived in vans in the past, separately, and are coming back from a year cycle touring, so I'm sure the boat will feel palatial.
I'm just after any hints and tips about living on a boat. Anything we should be thinking about before we get there?
It's a short narrow boat (I don't know the correct name if it has one) and it's mored in Yorkshire. I'm pretty excited about it.

  • Anything we should be thinking about

Toilet, water, moorings (permanent or continuous cruising)

If you've lived in vans it's probably similar in terms of confines and considerations around resources like power etc.

  • Also gas/coal/electric/heating/fuel availability? Have humped sacks of coal along a towpath on a bike and it’s not that much fun! Although it’s getting warm, the damp is what makes it miserable for me.
Is it moored somewhere with good swimming? Living on a canal mooring without great swimming is just cruel, especially when it’s hot and sunny!

  • Thanks. That’s tonight’s bedtime reading!
