  • From what I’ve read Dombrowski gutted the farm system to build this team, so not sure how they replenish the team, unless they are trading for prospects..
I’d assume there will be pressure to keep the band together and try to repeat, and rely on Cora to get the best out of his players...

  • Shame that wasn't closer, but there's not a great deal the Dodgers can do if their ace doesn't have his stuff. Well done to Boston.

  • In spirit at the Ebbetts Field...'traitors'.

  • In the article I linked to upthread, you don't give late-career Dombrowski a call for a 5-year rebuild plan.
John Henry was probably as surprised as anybody that the '13 Red Sox won. They were a good team, but without that Ortiz Grand Slam, Detroit (& Dombrowski), were looking good for a World Series appearance.

John Henry & Dave Dombrowski go back to Expansion-era Florida Marlins in 1997
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Dombrowski
so I reckon any cashing in of the Farm System for trades was fully approved by 'management'.
Given the strength and the youth of the Yankees John Henry may have determined that '18 was the last chance for 4 or 5 years for the Red Sox to obtain homefield advantage through the postseason.

  • The Dodgers starters were pretty good: the Dodgers bats went dead, not aided by Dave Roberts platooning.
Can't blame Roberts for trying what worked in the regular season, but the Red Sox pitchers are not NL 3,4,5 starters.
Let's hope the Dodgers management pick up Roberts' '19 option.
Successive World Series appearances don't deserve the sack.

  • I read a fascinating article about the Giants & Dodgers relocating. Astonishing to realise how parochial US sport was, and how much (gate) money there was to be made out West.

  • The Dodgers starters were pretty good: the Dodgers bats went dead, not aided by Dave Roberts platooning.

Well, Buehler and Hill were good, but Kershaw and Ryu certainly weren't. Kershaw just didn't have his stuff. It happens to many pitchers on whom the team relies so heavily during the regular season.

In Games 2 and 3 (18 innings!), the scores were 4-2 (for Boston) and 3-2 (for LA), and either game could have gone the other way. In Game 1, the Dodgers scored four runs and got Sale out after four innings, but Kershaw wasn't good and then the Boston bullpen (including Eovaldi) did for them. Obviously, on the whole the Dodgers bullpen didn't deliver, either.

Very interesting that Jansen attributes his drop in performance to the heart medication he has to take.

  • But the thing is dombrowski’s got his World Series ring, validation for his methods and now has to do it again. Boston isn’t one of those sports town that will wail and moan if they have to do a rebuild, as long as the fan base can see some method in the madness (see celtics under Danny ainge, once they traded the core of their 2008??? Championship team). He’ll be given time if deadwood needs to be shipped out. The issue is, whether the best team in baseball this season and possibly one of the best teams ever needs a tear down after just winning the World Series?

  • Anyone else trying to get tickets for the London Series?

  • Yes, Ticketmaster appears to be fucked

  • Just realised I'm off to Scarborough for a week on the day of the first game, sigh.

  • Yep, you could say that... no cheap ass tickets left at all... just tried for the last hour to get something and there's nothing at all... a few if you want to spend £250 though ;)

  • Very disappointing, could fly to Boston for that money ;)

  • I know which is a pain in the arse... touts have prolly got a load of them... hold tight for Stub Hub!

  • Stub Hub prices are triple the price than Ticketmaster

  • Red Sox sign Eovaldi to 4-year deal

'Just' $17M per year! Red Sox rotation looking good for '19.

  • I tried a few times for the Early bird tickets a few days ago - nothing available for 2 adults and 2 kids even a few minutes after release. Assumed that the whole Early Bird thing was limited to just a few tickets to garner interest.

Logged on yesterday to look at the general release and it simply said "No Tickets" - that was a few hours after release TBF.

Looks like they have been hoovered up by sponsors allocations & touts..

Shame - was really looking forward to it.

  • Welcome to the Hall of Fame

    Mike Mussina.

  • Most valuable MLB contract ever:
    not yet confirmed

  • Crazy amount of money, apparently 300mil for 10 years with a get out clause after five... I can see why he's done it but no idea why he has... Padres aren't exactly the best team... well, they're pretty damn shit

  • I can sort of understand it why there's so much ado about this transfer.

  • The Padres are never going to pay him all $300M.
None of the probable contenders wanted Machado,
(either because they have adequate production at 3rd base
or (laughably) short stop much cheaper than $30m/year,
    or,
they had worries about his temperament),
so the only option was for Scott Boras, (Machado's agent),
to set a new benchmark with a non-contender.
(The Padres are supposed to have 'the Best Farm System' in MLB,
but you need a lot of luck, good management and freedom from injuries
for a farm system to develop into contention).

If Machado gets through the first 5 years, I reckon he will by then be a lumbering 1st baseman, (think late Cardinal Albert Pujols, with less production),
    or,
a fulltime DH, (think David Ortiz without the media friendly personality).

  • Bryce yourself for the next big MLB contract.
