  • Ok, it seems reasonable to assume that this frameset is a lot older than I'd realized. Something between late '70s and early '80s.
So I'll be looking to make up an old groupset to put on. Thinking of arabesque (strange name, anyone know why), seems affordable and parts seem reasonably plentiful. So if any of you have some spare, send me a pm and we may get this bike built up with something appropriate.
    Cheers

  • Arabesque = An ornamental design consisting of intertwined flowing lines, originally found in ancient Islamic art.

  • Thanks for that! Now to find some . . . .

  • Have you tried a 700c or 27 x 1 1/4 in the frame.

If it is older and made for 27's you may have a lot of clearance if your using 700's.

  • I put a 700 in last night, and offered up a short reach tri ultegra mech. It was around 10-12mm short, so hoping a longer drop caliper would be ok!
Which would be 48-57mm, I think if memory serves

    Mike

  • Tektro R599's

With mudguards to fill the void 😬

  • Aaaaarrrrgh! NO! Lol!

Got someone with some spare calipers pm'ed me. See how they look.
Also now have a front mech and shifters. Good start!

    Mike

  • Now confirmed by the factory as a 1986 frameset.

    Mike

  • Nice, I wasn't too far away with my guesses then, although I did hedge a tad 😂

Any more info on the frame besides the year of construction?

  • None I'm afraid.
Slowly gathering parts for it. Looking for some pedals next. Arabesque ones, as they're specific to the cranks
Edit: Not specific, standard size axle. 600AX ones are oversize

    Mike

  • Jackson's always look older than they are? Or just me?

  • I thought that, looking at the drop outs and general design. They must know though. Love my 2012 631 tubed one!

    Mike

  • Don't think there are any Arabesque Pedals as such, PD-6207 or PD-6400 would be your closest match, I'll double check Mike as I may have some 6207's if I do I'll put in with the other stuff, cheers

  • Excellent! Let me know k, cheers. Yes 6207's are what I was thinking too!

    Mike

  • I will know maybe this evening, stuck indoors painting,

  • Is this what Dave would call a marginal gain?

Received in the post today. Well it's a start!

    Mike

  • Hi folks, bit of an update for you.

Went away for a week in the FoD, and came back to some parcels.

  • And thanks to forum member K on here, I now have most of what I need for the groupset. Pedals will be arriving soon, too.

Soon be time to decide on the paint, although I have one or two ideas.

    Mike

  • More progress has been made this week, with the arrival of a 52t chainring, now going to be 42/52. Also a nice black Rolls saddle, and the nipples and spokes, so this evening I laced the wheels up.

Is there anything more satisfying than building up your own wheels?

Groupset has been washed and is now ready to put on the bike. Once I've decided on the colourscheme.

    Mike

  • Looking strong Mike!

  • Thanks!

Did a bit more tensioning on the wheels today, will do final true up when the brakes are on. Couldn't resist a quick mock up this afternoon. Have a couple of ideas for the paint, still to decide which to go for. It will go to Bob Jackson's for it though, either way.

  • Hi Mike, being a bob jacks surely got to be painted white and with this year perhaps being a great year for the club no better way to celebrate (sorry I know it's football related) cheers k

  • No, not white! I'm thinking dark, nice contrast to shiny bits.
A: Metallic burgundy faded into dark metallic grey.
B: Something I've seen online, two tone green. Looks great!

    Mike

  • (Of course joking really), I find their frames having an older look to them, always look great in period paints which don't have too much of a shine.

  • I finally got around to sending the frameset off today, having been distracted by a Bianchi frameset that I built into a bike.
Not straight forward either I can tell you, had to cut out a seatpost, something I dread!
Anyway, I have a nice fluted post for the Jackson to polish up, now I have a bit of time on my hands.
