Yes, lets! Did you see my text about that mirror btw? Still wish i'd bought it, even my girlfriend said I should have which is a rare thing to hear!

Looking very promising. Excited to see the result!
Whats with the wack bars in the stem? haha are they making a comeback?

Looks like a good mix of black and silver parts.
But why the square taper crank though?
I'm hollowtech et al are much, much nicer to fit and maintain. -

those bars are awesome

@t0-ster There's nothing whack about multiple hand positions when you're touring! The risers will probably remain fitted most of the time, and the butterfly bars will be fitted for touring etc.
@MisterMikkel Square taper cranks because pretty much all modern cranks lack the elegance of 90s Dura Ace, and the Phil Wood bottom bracket is a beautiful thing. I have never had any issues with square taper cranks on any of my bikes- as long as they're fitted properly, and the crank bolts aren't allowed to loosen.
@platypus I guess you mean the butterfly bars? Yes! Such a nice shape- loads of backsweep, and although I haven't had the chance to ride with them yet, just sitting on the bike with them fitted feels like they're going to work really well.
Edit: Oh yeah, I almost forgot- I built it all up earlier. Haven't fitted the mudguards yet, as I want to make some little stainless brackets, and had to borrow the bottom bracket and pedals from my beater, as I can't find my Phil BB tool. the temporary bb is a 110mm axle, and it's supposed to be 104mm, so the chainline isn't right, but it means I can ride it in the mean time.
Annoyingly the self extracting crank bolts I had for it sit proud with the 7410 cranks, so I'm just using standard bolts for now, and will either find some original Shimano self extracting bolts, or just deal with having to use a crank puller (which is probably most likely).
They fit fine in my beater cranks, so they're not getting wasted!
I'll fit the mudguards etc, and take some better photos tomorrow. I've got some 10mm stainless tube, and some 6mm stainless rod, so might get the pipe bender/ tig welder going and make some racks over the weekend too...

nice straggler¡ is a 650b frame or 700c??
-
• #35
It's a 700c frame. the 650bx47c tyres on 28mm internal-width rims still fit with a little more than 5mm clearance either side. I wanted the option of running 700c wheels in the future too. I'm looking for a set of cheapish 29er wheels for the winter, actually.

Phase one of rack fabrication: Turning 2 old, Lignum Vitae, crown green bowls into a set of rollers for a pipe bender. It's a very hard wood, and very stable. The rollers are al turned 'freehand', and measure within a tollerance of 0.05mm to the design dimensions. I had to make a special cutting tool to get a really accurate profile, to match the pipe. The better the profile of the roller, and the harder the material, the better the quality of the bend!
Next step is to make the frame for the pipe bender, and then start bending the racks into shape! I've got a load of 10mm stainless tube, and some 6mm round bar. The rack designs sorted too- The Diameter of the main roller is the same as the spacing of the bolts on the outside of the fork crown. I'll post more when I start making them.

Those tyres are awsome

What’s the design of the rack like? Would you be interested in making a batch and selling one?
-
• #46
Potentially. Wait until you see the finished product. If there's interest, I might be able to make a few custom racks to order.

• #47
sounds good, I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Nice home made tool !!
Such a classy wood. Subbed -

Could you please take some photos of tire clearance (seat stays, chain stays and fork)? You can DM me, I would be thankful.

What is your rack idea going to look like? Registering potential interest for my straggler if you do end up making a few.
Yes, the latest, black frame. The Straggler has barely changed over the years, but the dropouts on the most recent version are slightly beefed-up.
Yes, I've been meaning to write you for ages, but very rarely get near the internet, and always forget. Let's go for a ride or something?
